hi folks:
newbie to this board but a long time pop uper.....and i'm looking for some advice.
i have a larger pu (jayco eagle 12 udk) and it has always bothered me a little that it didn't have brakes.  although just under the legal limit requiring brakes i've always sorta wanted them.

i'm thinking of adding some elec hubs......doesn't look like it would be that complicated and i would feel better......especially loaded and in the mountains.   has anyone does this mod that could offer some words of wisdom about the project?

thanks

happy camping!  :D

I recently finished adding brakes to my ATV trailer. It was a 3 month project, but mostly because of $$$ instead of time. I also had to wire the truck, as it wasn't pre-wired.

If you take a wheel off the camper, if your trailer's axle is ready for brakes to be mounted, there will be a square mounting flange. If the trailer doesn't have this mounting flange (with four holes for screws), then a new axle is in order. So, let's start there. Does your trailer have this flange on each end of the axle?

PS: I have pictures, but I have to get them developed. No fancy cameras for me!

You can look from the opposite side off the trailer at the back of the wheel to see if there's a small square flange with holes in the corner without taking a wheel off.

thanks for the responses!
yes it has the square flange.  the tv is already wired for brakes and i have a tekonsha voyager brake controller..(used for a flat bed trailer).

it looks like i only need to swap them and run some dc to them.

pictures would be a help though.

thanks guys.................

Sounds like the hard stuff is done. I did have to repack my bearings at the time I put on my brakes and drums, because the old bearings had to come off.

Just find a local store to buy the brakes and drums (trailer dealers often have them), or look at harborfreight.com, northerntool.com, or dexteraxle.com for brakes and drums. I bought mine locally from my ATV trailer dealer.

The wiring is pretty easy too. On mine, there were two wires coming out, and they had no polarity (so to speak). You could use either one as ground, and the other one as hot. They need to be wired in parallel (pos to pos, neg to neg), not in series.

Looks like you are well on your way to brakes on your camper! I am a little jealous...I have done a lot of work to get brakes/wiring/controller for our rather heavy ATV trailer, but we don't usually travel great distances. I really wanted brakes for the camper, but on ours, it will require a new axle. Yuck!

I will try and get my pics developed and added to my website.
