I was wandering around on RV.net & came upon a post about someone creating a "Southern California Campers" group, posted in the Rallies section.  It appears to have quite a little following in the 3 days it's been around.  You'll see that I posted a reply about SCCampers (I'm ForestRiverTeach there).  Are there proprietary issues here?  Guess I'm feeling a bit protective of you all, even though I haven't even met you yet!

Laura,

Thanks for letting us know.  I'll contact the SCCampers legal department.

GriffsMommy and GriffsDaddy, what do you think?

Ah, it's so nice to have easy access to legal assistance.

If someone from this group mistakenly signs up for that rally they will find themselves surrounded by the big Class A behemoths.

All residents of Southern California who are Campers and like to go in Groups should be alerted NOT to use their geographic location, or call themselves a group.  Also, I'd better alert students from the University Of Southern California, and the University of South Carolina, and residents of those States that like to go camping not to use the term SCCampers.  The legal ramifications could be severe.

Funny you should mention the two USCs.  The only thing funnier than the USC Trojans playing against the University of Oregon teams those rate occations when they meet the University of South Carolina teams.

Laura,

Your protectiveness is sweet, especially since you haven't even met us yet!!!:) ;)   I checked out the post, and I don't think there's a problem with them wanting to be "Southern California Campers."  Technically, we're Southern California Pop-Up Campers, nicknamed SCCampers or SCC, and while I do think a valid argument could be made that the other group's name potentially presents a "likelihood of confusion" between the two groups, we are not an incorporated business or organization, nor have we trademarked our name, so I'm not sure that trademark/trade name/copyright law would even be applicable to us.  I also think that RV.net appeals to a more Class A & C crowd, and even though we're not exclusive to pop-ups, we draw a...uh...different sort of crowd than rv.net.  (That's different in a good way.  No, really. ;) :J ) Plus, they're interested in only dry camping, and we do whatever, whereever.  And like LaLindy noted, we're not in competition, so I think it'll be okay.  But thanks again for your concern for us. :)

Just remember, Scott, you get what you pay for. ;)  Oh and btw, the above posted information was not intended to constitute legal advice and no client-attorney relationship was created by the posting of said information.  :J

Thanks for the good words! I'm looking forward to seeing most of you in June, and some of you NEXT weekend.  I keep looking at pictures, just to make sure I might know you better when I see you all.  I know, it's a teacher thing -- trying to connect names and faces quickly.  But I'm officially on vacation for the next 9 days (yes, we DO count weekends!), so forget the teacher stuff!

As an aside, I've gone & bought myself a GPS.  I've been toying (get the pun?!!) with the idea for quite some time, and the upcoming trips put me over the edge.  Maybe by June I'll know how to use it!  But I'm going to try this weekend at Carpinteria & next weekend at Wm. Heise.  It really looks like fun!

Again, thanks!

Laura
