I am upgrading my tow vehicle from a Ford Ranger ex. cap to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Ford pulled my 99" Coleman Cheyenne up to 60 mph with no sway(over 60 mph it did start to).
My question is how necessary is a sway bar? I'm getting low on funds and we are planning a trip out of state in two weeks.
What is the least expensive sway bar that works ? Could I put it on myself ?
Thank You
Richard

We have a Ford Expedition (5.4L engine) to tow our 2002 Coleman Sun Valley, and we use a sway bar.  We probably don't need it, but when my family's safety is at stake, it's worth the extra cost for the peace of mind it gives me.

I don't know how much we paid for our sway bar--probably just a hundred or so dollars--but it is money well spent IMHO.

Hope that helps! :)

if the wheel base is shorter on the Jeep you'll get more sway..I would call around to get different prices, as for installing it yourself, I don't know, I believe the have to weld something in the trailr. When I had my Suburban I had sway around 63mph, My Ford F15O supercrew never had a problem was going about 72 mph and didn't know it :yikes:  and the Expedition I'd get sway between 59 & 60 mph..I was going to instal one but I bout The hybrid and it has a WDH and a sway bar and it does make a difference.

bottom line, I agree with Lori...spend the bucks, most Hitch places install them Camping world probably does too. they may be cheaper.

I had a sway bar installed on my 1999 Coleman/Fleetwood Nevada.  The plate that is mounted to the tongue of the trailer could be bolted or welded on (newer Coleman/Fleetwood trailers have the bolt holes on the tongue already).  If the tongue jack on your trailer is on the "passenger" side, like mine, the sway bar will have to be mounted on the "drivers" side of the trailer.  Which means the sway bar will be put on upside down.  It doesn't hurt anything, but the writing will be upside down on the unit when you put it on the trailer.  The little ball that is on a plate that is bolted between the draw bar and the regular towing ball needs to be for the drivers side of the tongue.  The standard little ball mounts on the passenger side of the tow ball.  Yes you can do this yourself.  I paid $100 to have one installed on my trailer.:)
