Hi Gang,

I was thinking about taking the family down to San Felipe Mexico in the new PU. My question is has anyone camped down there, if so what campground and what was the power supply, (i.e. no-power hook-ups, 15amp, 30amp or 50amp)... Trying to figure out what I may need to bring.....>????

Thx Matt in San Diego

We have stayed at Pete's Camp and would stay there again.  There are no hookups and we take our own water.  I've been told that US holiday weekends can be quite rowdy.  http://www.petescamp.com  No need to change to pesos.  Right next door is El Dorado, a US resort-type campground where lots of snowbirds stay with their big rigs.  It's not our cup of tea, but there's a nice restaraunt and pool.  On the internet somewhere I found a page that listed all the campgrounds from north to south, and stated the details of each...but now I don't know where it is.

AAA has a good list and accurate descriptions of campgrounds in their "Camping in Baja" book.  Last spring when we were there, it was so-o-o-o windy.  Our son the Baja-lover says it's often windy there and tells about his little girls being in a tent that was blown end-over-end down the beach!! Also, parts of the road down were pretty rough, but most of the way was okay.

We're looking forward to a trip next month, or Feb. at the latest.  I'm looking forward to it and hope to explore the hot springs which I'm told are 15-20 miles south of San Felipe.

I have never been there, but my Aunt and Uncle have.  They said that their is  a range of campgrounds available. :)

We went to Mexico a few years ago, but not the same place you mentioned.  We stayed at the River's Edge RV Park.  It is located in Whinterhaven, CA.  It was very convienent because it was only 3 miles to Algadonas, Mexico and 2 miles into Yuma, AZ so you were very close to a Wally-World and grocery stores, etc.   When you drove to Algadonas you parked in an Indian owned parking lot and just walked across the border.   It cost $2 then, and they gave you discount coupons to their casino in Whinterhaven.   The RV Park had all the hook-ups.  I don't remember how much it cost, but since a friend's parents camp there 6 months out of the year and keep a trailer there, we had connections.  They have over 500 sites and that is where a lot of the old folks camp so they can go over to Mexico to get Meds, go to the Dr., Dentist, or Optomotrist, etc.   We had a great time.

Here is an update.... I was able to contact a few of the campgrounds and here is what they said.

El Dorado: Full hookups (30amp service) , large pool for the kids and about $30 a night for the stay.. The campground boarders the beach but it is seperated by a fence. The campground is about a 10 minute plus drive North of San Felipe.

:S
I found another nice camping area in Mexico. It is called Baja Seasons and is on the Pacific Ocean side of Baja about 35 miles south of San Diego on the way to Ensenada.

Great beach, pool, and full hook-ups RV park. The only thing that is bad is the "Price". I was just quoted $70 a night for a beach front space for Labor Day Weekend 2005.

Here is the link: http://www.bajaseasons.com

Hope this helps other Mexico bound campers.

;) Here are some more links to Baja Seasons....

I have heard the rates run from $45-to-$70 depending on the view etc.

I have camped on the beach about 20 years ago and the beach is one of the best around within 50-70 miles. I am looking forward to have the beach and the pool for the kids, plus a safe place to leave the trailer when you drive into Puerto Nuevo for lobster dinner and drinks.... I will let you know if it's worth the money...

I swear by my Foghorn Outdoors Florida Camping book (will have to order the "new" (11/03) edition that shows the new exit numbers) and saw on Amazon that there is a Foghorn Outdoors for Baja.

We spent three weeks in Baja a couple years ago and generally power in campgrounds was limited to 15 amp outlets.  Only the high-dollar KOA had 30 (and 50) amp service.  Our converter failed on the trip and that could have been due to the notoriously erratic power in Guerrero Negro; although since the trailer was new it could have been bad from the start.

Thanks JimQPublic,

I am going to pick-up the baja and California book... I let you guys know how good the book is for the areas...

Stumbled across this couple's Web site. It appears they do quite a bit of camping in Mexico--even so far as leading tours of campers--and have an interactive map of cgs throughout Mexico:

Another consideration...make sure your insurance will cover your PU in Mexico.  The company we went with had made a point to say they would also cover the PU in Mexico and when we questioned others they didn't (it had never crossed my mind that it wouldn't be....) So...just to be on the safe side you may want to ask!  :>
