Hello,

I just joined the board after doing some surfing about popup campers.  We just bought our first one.  Its a 1992 Jayco 1008 deluxe (or so it says on the side).  It is in remarkably good condition for its age.  We are the 3rd owners.  The family we bought it from upgraded to a large camper trailer, and took very good care of it, always storing it in a garage.  They even included a second spare and 2 sets of wheel bearings he kept 'just in case'.

My main hobby is astronomy, and I have gone to several "star parties" where astronmy geeks like me camp out with our telescopes.  I have always used a tent before.  Most places we go don't have electic or water hookups.  In fact, white lights of any kind are usually prohibited at star parties!  I will probably use it 3-4 times a year for that.  We also hope to use this on some family vacations sometime.  But for the most part, we will probably be visiting local campgrounds and state parks for weekend getaways.

My family had one of these when I was young, and I loved it.  Now my wife and I hope to create fond memories for our 3 daughters, ages 9, 7, & 4.

I like to read about all your mods and tips, so keep them coming!  One of the things I liked about the one we bought, the previous family added shelving and section dividers in the pantry/closet thing and storage boxes.  They also removed the ice box and added shelves there too.  They gave us the icebox, but we will likely use the shelves instead, favoring a traditonal cooler for cold items.  I had to make a custom electrical cord to wire it to my pickup.  One front running light is not working, even with a new bulb.  I also noticed the tires were way underinflated after I got it home.  There is also no lug wrench, so I will have to buy one of those.  Other than that, no major problems.  We are still getting used to it, and getting it cleaned up for our first time out with it, hopefully next weekend.

Happy camping, everyone!
Tim

Most likely that light that doesn't work has a bad socket or ground. A multimeter is just about a must for any RV'er. You'll get good use out of even a cheapy and they come with directions.

What might help for your star gazing parties is they make the bulb types in the ceiling lights in amber and red versions, and if the local auto supply doesn't stock them they will have transparent red paint used to color bulbs for folks that break tail light lenses and need something to block the white light from showing through to pass inspection.
