Anybody have experience with any of the following places?

Santee State Park
Poinsett State Park
Dreher Island State Rec Area

We like woodsy/lakeside type camping with relatively private sites, but will not be able to travel as far as western SC to visit the mountains.  We will be staying 2 nights, so need stuff to do, i.e. hiking, canoeing, etc.  Any suggestions?

Pointsett is a good (Small) park, i live down the road from it. The camp sites are ok, but NOT near any water. Santee is a bigger park geared for the water crowd. both places are pretty much the same set up and site wise with Pointsett having the edge in woodseyness, and quite-ness!!

Try Modoc COE on Lake Strom Thurmond.  It would be perfect for you.  Hiking trails, campsites right on the water, fishing, etc.  It is located near Clarks Hill, west of Edgefield.

Do you have a phone number or website for that campground?  I did a google search, but couldn't find it.

By the way, what's a COE campground?

COE = Corps of Engineers, as in US Army Corps of Engineers.  One of their missions is to provide public services on land surrounding water control projects.

They maintain a comprehensive number of campgrounds.

Map of USACE Engineer Divisions and Districts

You can go to the division map and find recreation opportunities in different areas of the country.

For reservations COE uses reserve.usa

From the COE website:

QuoteYou can reserve many U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campsites online by visiting //www.reserveusa.com, the official website of the National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS).

The website is a commercial site provided by ReserveAmerica, the reservation service provider for the NRRS. The NRRS is a partnership between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the USDA Forest Service. Reservations may also be made by calling toll free, 1-877-444-6777.
The National Recreation Reservation Service web site is a non-government commercial site maintained in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the USDA Forest Service.

Phone number is 706-333-2272.  They don't take reservations at Modoc - one of the few that doesn't.   They tend to fill up so call.  You'll love it.

We stayed for a long weekend at Dreher Island and LOVED it.  The lake is so clean and clear, the kids were happy to spend the day swimming.  If you like to fish, it is also a good fishing lake.  Where we stayed was nice and shady and a nice breeze off the lake.  The bathhouse was good, nothing fancy but they kept it clean.  We are thinking of going there again this summer

Modoc began taking reservations again this spring re: finishing their construction.  They have renumbered some of the sites so be aware that where you stayed last year may have a new site number.

Mesa Mac

We camped several years ago at Dreyher - Sites were OK, kinda small though. Seemed to be very popular with boaters and they often partied until well after dark.  More people interested in their boats than their campers or sites.  I've tried to avoid areas like that unless there are other ammenities or advantages to the park.  Now if boating is your thing, this would be a good park. The lake is large and canoeing might not be the best.

We just got back from a 4 night stay at Dreyher Island.  During the week the type of people who are there is different...more laid back, but as people came in for the weekend (Thursday night) you could hear the noise level go up.  But we still had a nice time.  The kids LOVE to swim in the lake, fish and ride bikes there.  One day the kids and DH took a day trip to the Riverbanks zoo  //www.riverbanks.org/  (I had to stay back with the dog) and had a great time.  We plan on going again with friends who have a boat.  Yes the sites are a bit on the small side, but we just like the lake too much to stay away.  There was just one other popup when we were there...we were the only ones cooking out side and really enjoying the camp experiance (jmho) Oh well!
