Here's an odd question

We're going to be heading to a CG that has full hookups including sewer.  Right now we just dump our greywater into a tote, I'm contemplating picking up one of these

so we can connect directly to the sewer hookup with a garden hose.  My question is, this piece obviously seals up at the sewer hookup and the hose seals to the camper, but what about sewer gas coming up through the drain?

Our PU has just a garden hose from the bottom of the sink to the connection on the outside of the camper.  I "think" there's a trap in the bottom of the sink.  Will that keep the sewer smells from coming up into the camper?

If I have to smell poop and stuff (hehe), I'll just dump my greywater into the tank and then dump the tank into the sewer hookup.  I'll deal with the smell for a couple minutes while the tank drains vs all weekend through the sink.

Any thoughts?

Not that odd of a question in my opinion. In fact, I've wondered that myself. I have one of the adapters pictured, but have never used it. I prefer to use the tote and then dump the tote.

Back to the question - if there is no trap built into the line in your PUP (my Jayco doesn't), then there is a chance that you might get some gasses back up the line. There are a few things you can try to counteract this. The easiest is to make sure there is enough hose so that you have a loop or two of drain hose laying on the ground. Since the end of the hose will rise from ground level to the drain connection, a natural trap will form seal off rising gasses. Another trick involves making a small loop in the hose near where it connects to the PUP. Water will remain in the loop after the water has drained creating a seal from gasses.

Hope this helps,

We used a simular set up the one & only time we had full hook ups ( I don't even know where it is now!). There were no gasses backing up into the camper. The drain was much slower than when we use the blue tank.

Looking back, it's really not much more work using the big blue and dumping when needed.

That's a cool ... thing!  Where'd you get it?

We have one and use it every time we go to a full hook up site.  NO smells...no problem.  I personally think it's much easier than dumping.  You never have to worry about overfilling the container!

I used one all the time and never had the gases back up into the trailer. It worked great. the only time I hed an issue is when the spongy thing was too big and when you took the middle part out it was too small , but the smell would be at the hole not in the trailer

I have one and have used it a few times.  It works fine.  Where the hose is on the ground, it is lower than the sewer hookup spot, so the hose make its own trap.  No odors and it works very well.  Much nicer than using the tote.  No dumping and no cleaning the tote out.  I run hot water with soft scrub (from cleaning the sink) through the hose before breaking camp.:)
