Rookie questions

Perculators should only be used for full pots.  Half pots make nasty stuff.  We used perculators (cheap aluminum ones, and a nice stainless one) until the kids got us a Coleman drip pot a couple of years ago.  Much better coffee!  The prepackaged one pot bags are better with the 10 cup level than the 12 cup level.
 
By the way, when the Coleman glass coffee pot breaks, a Mr Coffee 10-12 cup replacement pot fits perfectly.
