Does anyone know anything about Silver Strand State Beach, in San Diego?

We are scrambling for a beach CG in July (DUH!! a little late). This is the only one that I can find with sites available :( .

Silver Strand is basically a strip of sand that juts out just south of Coronado. We've driven through it and there are ALWAYS whitcaps on the ocean there and NO ONE on the beach.  Why, you might ask?  Because it's really WINDY!!!  Now, granted, we've never stayed there, but my line of thinking is that if you can get a spot on a beach in July that easily, there might just be something wrong with the place....

Again, we have not stayed here, and the above is based purely on our observations just having driven through this area, so please correct me anyone if I'm wrong.

I used to be stationed in the US Navy at Coronado. Coronado is beautiful, lots of little shops, very quiet and the Hotel Del Coronado, very nice to see.

The Strand is exactly as the previous reply stated. It can get very windy and in a PU could be bad! The strand connects south to Imperial Beach, a very undesirable area. I wouldn't take the family down to Imberial Beach. Between Coronado and IB is approx 10 miles.

Thanks for the info. I lived on my yacht in San Diego, off of the Embarcadero, downtown. I was there for about a year (1998) after sailing around the world, until I sold my boat.

I am familiar with the sea breezes that come up in the afternoon. Trust me.....they are gentle compared to Pt Mugu :yikes:  and we camp there at least once a month. In fact, we are camping there this weekend :D .

Having said all that, the security issue does cause a little concern, however, not much. I've been to some of the most rotten places on the planet with my yacht and I have become very "street wise" over the years ;) .

I sure would like to hear from someone that has actually camped there :D .

Wayne, haven't camped there.  But the looks of it is like Emma Wood.  I would think Emma Wood is closer, they're all booked  up?  Doesn't surprise me.

Have you thought about Santee Lakes? :p You could take your kayak!

I'll talk to DW about it when she gets home. I just checked out Santee Lakes. It looks pretty nice but we are pretty set on beach camping. I need my ocean "Fix" at least once a month :D . That reminds me, It'll be hotter than heck in the end of July, down there.............HMMMMMMMMM!! will have to think that over. Thanks for the tip :D . If If I knew that someone else was going, we'd jump on it in a flash ;) .
