donThe couple of times I ve been to St. Louis, I remember the zoo being great and IIRC it was free.  I also enjoyed going to the top of the St. Louis Arch.

donAlmost all the museum s in Forest Park are free, including the Zoo.  Also the Science Center is there and is ranked as one of the top 10 in the country.  We used to live there and still go back to sitesee sometimes.

donOne of the closest campgrounds to St. Louis is [link=http://www.mostateparks.com/babler/camp.htm]Babler State Park[/link]. It s located in the western end of St. Louis County and is pretty close to getting to all of the attractions already listed above.

I don t know when you re planning your trip, but right now it s too dang cold!

donHey Don.....from a tourist standpoint.....I agree with these suggestions.  I loved the science center (and lots of interactive stuff for the kids) and the zoo.  There s also a 6 Flags not far away, if you want that.  And, when I vacationed there with friends, their kids LOVED going to McDonalds on the river (near the Arch).  I can even tell Amy where to go shopping.[;)] Sounds like a fun trip.  You might even think about Hannibal as a side trip.  I have no idea how far that is from St. Louis, but I m sure someone can help me out here!

I d recommend Babler State Park as well.  Just for clarification, it s Grant s Farm that s owned by the Busch Family, we don t have a Busch Garden here (wish).  About an hour out of St. Louis but not as far from Babler is Purina Farm (if you have kids).  It s fun and free for the kids.  There s also a mini-steam locomotive in Glencoe, MO which is close to Babler.  My gd loves to rige it, about 1/2 hr ride and not very expensive.

Hannibal is less than 2 hrs away, we camped there last fall.  But there s lots to do in St. Louis to keep you busy for a weekend.

donThe Katy bicycle trail is nice. It ends in St. Charles. I rode the trail when my kids were still in a Burley bike trailer. I thought it was a really nice bike trail. Located right along the Missouri river. The bowling hall of fame is kind of fun.

donAvoid Merrimac SP unless you like camping in a small city.  YUCK!

Pere Marquette in IL, north up the Mississippi a bit, is a nice park.  The Shawnee National Forest down near Carbondale, IL is pretty, too.
