Hubby & I are interested in trying out campgrounds in the Lake Placid, New York area or Lake Champlain in Vermont. I've been searching on the net and the Lake Placid area seems to have more hiking, mountain scenery, etc. Can anyone give any suggestions and maybe recommendations for campgrounds? Thanks a bunch for any help you can give!

Are you looking for private or public cg's? The public cg's are run by the NY DEC and are mostly dry. Our favorites are Cranberry Lake & Rollins Pond with Rollins being closer to Lake Placid.
15 minutes from Lake Placid in Wilmington is a KOA and North Pole Resorts (private). We've been going to North Pole for 3 years now for Columbus Day leaf peeping but this year we'll spend a week in August there. We prefer the newer 100 Acre Woods side in North Pole. On the way from Placid to Wilmington you'll pass Wilmington Notch, a DEC-cg. We've never stayed there but my neighbor takes his 30' MH there.
You can drive, hike (long!), or take a chairlift up Whiteface Mt. South of Placid the town of Keene is the heart of the High Peaks - endless hiking. In Placid you can take a bobsled run on the Olympic track and visit the ski jumps. An hour from Placid is Mt Arab, after an easy 1 mile hike you can climb a restored fire tower. ALso outside Placis is Cascade Mt, probably the easiest of the High Peaks to climb.
You can also rent a canoe from several area outfitters. There are almost endless waterways. I'd recommend St Regis Canoe Outfitters in Saranac Lake for a rental and shuttle service.
One "must see" is the new Wild Center in Tupper Lake, we went 2 weeks ago and were so impressed we bought a membership. A bit of a drive but worth it is the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake.
Generally you can consider Black Fly season over by the beginning of July if this helps in your planning. PM me if you want to chat some more.

We camp every year at the lake placid koa--very very nice-beautiful scenery with the falls and gorge that run along side the kids love it to.
