Hi all,
My family and i are going camping in a couple of weeks and I am getting worried about mosquitos. They are terrible in my area. What can I do about them as we will be outside most of the time at night?
Thank you in advance
Steff

The best repellent will have DEET in it.  However, there are health concerns about using DEET.  Take a look around and see what you think.  We used Bull Frog repellent on our last trip and it worked pretty well.  Under our awning, we use one of those Off lanterns.  Worked pretty well also.

DEET is what you need. A few years ago Consumer Reports did a study on bug sprays and found that Deet worked the best and that the brand of bug spray rated the best was ???:eyecrazy: it comes in a yellow can, but I can't think of the name of it now. I will have to look tomorrow.:) I guess I mean today.

Ultrathone is the name of it.

A screen room that fastens on to your awning would be nice for those times.
I have not got one for my awning yet but meanwhile we take along a screen tent.
It is one of those small ones 6'x6' that pops up and down in seconds, very handy but one at least 12'x12' that fits over a picnic table would be better.

The most effective products for mosquitoes in the past have been those with the DEET ingredient, however, that chemical has been controversial for the last few years regarding some harmful effects, especially using it on children. Awhile back Bayer pioneered a newer ingredient for insect repellents and it is called Picardin, which is being touted as the future replacement for DEET.

Last year I tried a product using this new Picardin, called Cutter "Advanced", and I found it to be as effective as DEET for mosquitoes and much more pleasant to use. This season I was introducted to a new Avon product that uses the Picardin, too, and this is even more pleasant.

I do a lot of fly fishing and you have to take great care using DEET products as this chemical will disolve the plastic coating on the fly fishing lines. The newer Picardin does no harm to these coated flylines.

Fly
It works well for mosquitoes, but not for ticks.  So if you are going to be in a tick area you should still use Deet.:)

Ultrathon is the one I coundn't remember earlier.

Well, I'm in tick & chigger country ... big time!

To date, just using the Picaridin based products, no ticks or chigger bites.

The best thing I found was called Holiday-Inn, runs about $50-$100 most places but you wont have any bugs, its avalible most places and works very well. Just a little humor.... :D J-Bird

It will also eat your dashboard if it leaks out on it, we learned that one the hard way!
