We are in the planning stages of a trip to Maine this year.  We've narrowed the campground down to either Smuggler's Den campground or Ocean Wood campground.  I'm looking for input on these 2 campgrounds.  Has anyone stayed at either of these?  Would you recommend them?  I've found quite a few reviewed for each of them, and they have been mostly good.

Any other info would be greatly appreciated, especially for Ocean Wood.  I can't find a web page.

Hi,

We are also planning a trip to Maine this summer.  We are looking for something close to the Lobster festival which takes place the first week of August.  I thought I found one I liked but I did a search for Maine Campground reviews and found that most people said it was too noisy because it was close to the highway.  I'm glad I found that out.  We are also planning on going to Acadia National Park, that is about 2 hours away.  I'm very excited about our trip.

Sorry I couldn't help you with your question but if you do a goole search with the name of the campground followed by review you may find some info.

Here is a review of the campground you were looking at.  I found it on the net.

Hope that helps.

Yep, I've come across several reviews for the campground.  But I'd sure like to find a web page or a review with some pics and a map of the park.

Thanks and good luck.

A few years ago I drove through Smugglers Den campground. I was not overly impressed. It was crowded and the roads were not in good shape. I didn't take any pictures, sorry.  Where is Ocean Woods located?  Is it over on the peninsula?  If it is I drove through it too, and liked it.  It was more state parkish. :)

That's the one.  It's over by the Schoodic Peninsula part of Acadia.  I've got a brochure coming in the mail.  When I spoke with them, they told me that it was run like a nature preserve.  Also said that this time of year, the sites on the water are often being hit with 30' waves from the North Atlantic storms.

Thanks for the info on the parks.

It takes about an hour to drive from the campground over to the Bar Harbor area.  There is a ferry that you can take from the peninsula to Bar Harbor.  As I remember the campground it was very quiet and the sites were spaced a bit apart.  If you are looking for a quiet restful area then this is the campground for you.  The only private campground on Mt. Desert Island that I like is the one at the top of Somes Sound.  I can't think of the name or it, sorry.  It is on free bus run though.:)

A note of interest: The Dive In Theater (boat trip out of Bar Harbor) is one of the most entertaining/educational things to do in the area.  Diver Ed takes a video camera to the bottom of Frenchman's Bay and then brings up some of the critters from the bottom.  We have done the program several times and love it.  So have the other people I know that have gone to it.
