We plan on driving to Lake Meredith our first night and camping for one night (maybe two if the kids want to stay longer). Our next stop is going to be the Painted Desert/Coconino Forest area in Arizona (roughly 530 miles). We plan on staying one night there and heading to the Grand Canyon for a few days. From there, we will hit 29 Palms, CA, Joshua Tree, San Diego etc, and then start winding our way back to the MidWest. Of course this plan is subject to change, as I would love to get back to my old stomping grounds in the Washington DC area for a long road trip...

Austin,

Wow.  That's elaborate.  I like it.  I'm just afraid to ask if you have the protocol for dumping the PP written up.

Re: miles-

I acted as a witness for an online acquaintance who rode his motorcycle to 48 states in 6 days, 31 minutes.  The biggest miles I've ever done on a bike were 8,000 in a month (to Panama) or 1600 in 32 hours (including an 8 hour break).  The basic rule on a motorcycle is don't take your helmet off if you're trying to make time.

Towing? I pulled a U-haul 770 miles on a recent Saturday in 14 hours total including an hour loading furniture.  I never went over 65 mph but I seldom went under 63.  Stops consisted of gas, coffee, & a fruit/nut stand.  Great fresh crop almonds.  Word to the wise:  Don't eat an entire pound of almonds while sitting in the car for 14 hours.  It took three days for my intestines to stop punishing me.

With wife and kids?  250 is pretty much our limit.  Without the wife is easier, but don't tell her.  I drove 500 miles each way (not towing) with the kids this summer and it was a piece of cake.  Going up we left at 5:30 and got there in time for a late lunch.

I've got ya both beat.................I went 7000 miles, non-stop, from Cape Town, South Africa to Annapolis, MD. I just went a little slower than you guys did...........I drove for 1,420 hours straight (even in my sleep). I didn't even stop for gas :p .

I was on a sailboat. :D

Are you kidding??? :J

My wife could'a slept through anything. She, literally, slept 8 hours when we were in Cyclone Bola, in the Tasman Sea (300 miles west of New Zealand), in 1988.

It was just me and the autopilot :p

Quote from: tlhdocWe have done over 800 miles in a day towing the camper, but it was just for one day. Not several days in a row. One long day at a time when camping, for us any how.:)
Not quite to that extent, but we are over 500 miles pulling the camper in a day.

But the reality of popping down, driving some goshawful distance, then popping up - I don't think anyone would want to think of doing that night after night.  Maybe with a travel trailer/5th wheel, but with a popup?  No thanks!!
