Question:

Any views on a Coleman Hot Water on Demand system versus a Zodi?
DH wants a zodi as a friend has one and likes it but I said we should try and see if anyone here has a view.  We need some sort of water heating system other than pots on the stove.

Thanks!

Shelly...can't speak for the Zodi but we've been well pleased with our HWOD. If you do a search on the 'Product Review' page and change the timing from last month view to one year, you can see more info on it. Our HWOD goes on every trip!

If I am not mistaken, the Zodi has an open flame for heating whereas the HWOD does not.  I have a HWOD and really like it.  My camper now has hot water, but I used the HWOD many, many times when I had a camper that didn't have the hot water.  It is so easy to set up and oh so easy to use.  It is a great product.

Last Oct. we went from stove/pan to Zodi. I had to spend more time carring water, but it was a new toy. For our Dec. trip I went back to s/p because the water is off in some parks and I had to do dishes inside and didn't want to spray water all over twice a day. You can't stop the flow of water with the heater on.

I liked SkipP's HWOD so much I bought one of my own!

I have a Zodi Extreme SC which is basically a stainless steel can with a hand pump that screws in the top and has a tube with a shower head on it.  It sits on a stand and an exposed burner which heats the bottom of the can with a standard camping propane bottle.  It has an aquarium style stick on thermometer to tell you when it's up to temp.  It holds about 2.5 gallons.  For our backwoods camping, it works great- and no batteries required for the pump.

I originally bought the 2 burner Zodi unit, but it wastes too much water (you can't turn it off - it must constantly have water flow).

Another tip - take an insulated 5 gallon (Gatorade style- the kind they pour on the winning football coach) water jug and put hot water in it (either from your home or a Zodi or Coleman heater or stovetop).  It will stay warm for quite a while and you can use it for washing dishes, hands, etc.

Cheers,
Jeff
