Trim sealant

I am in the process of repairing my '93 Jayco Eagle.  I have removed several of the side trim pieces and light covers.  I will be removing the trim going down the center of the roof.  My questions are:

  What is the difference between putty tape and butyl tape?
  Do I need each for my repairs or just one and use it in all the areas?

Thanks in advance.  I have repaired the sides of the camper roof and they came out pretty good.  I also replaced about half of the back end of the camper wood behind the tail lights.  It has been pretty smooth going so far.
