Do you tow with a Van or SUV?

This is a TV mod, but I have a question for those of you that tow with a van or SUV. Does anyone have one of those spoiler/deflector wings over the rear of the vehicle, and does it work at helpiing the rear stay clean(er)? Also please state the vehicle and whether or not you travel dirt roads often. I'm so tired of washing our Astro, only to drive it down the road to have the rear coated with dirt!

I tow with the Toyota Sienna, which has a deflector to direct air down the back of the car.  I don't drive on dirt roads a lot but it appears to help keep the back of the car a bit cleaner.

I've had a bunch of wagon-type vehicles with that deflector and a number without.  I can't tell a bit of difference.

That deflector can only send some small amount of wind down the rear if you are going at speed (which you probably aren't on a dirt road).  But you are also picking up dirt from under the car, sides of the car, etc..  In particular, towing, the TV rear will get filthy very quickly, I guess from the turbulence of the TV, open gap, trailer airflow.

Wet or dirt
Full size Jeep Wagoneer (1972) - Filthy - big air deflector (no wiper either)
78 VW Rabbit - Filthy - no deflector, no wiper
80 Mercedes Wagon - filthy - no deflector - rear wiper
96 Audi A6 wagon - filthy - deflector - rear wiper
00 Chevy Tahoe - extremely filthy period, wiper, no deflector.
95/00 Ford Windstar - filthy

I travel country, dirt, gravel roads often enough.  Also travel on salted roads.

I guess it helps a little bit, but dust (if I remember correctly) has a slight electrostatic charge on it which makes it stick to the car anyhow.  Otherwise, you would think driving a car after it gets dust covered would make it blow off...but it stays on there.  Your Astro with that vertical rear end probably just has the dirt swirl around the car from all directions and cake on.

Yep, I can watch it in the rear view mirror swirl around the sides, up from the bottom and impact the rear of the van.  I can blow it off with my air compressor fairly easy, but not sure about how much airflow the deflector will generate.

I didn't note your location until now - If your environment is the FL panhandle, like the Bay County/PC area we lived in for years, you're dealing with sand dust and you aren't going to win no matter what you do...
