Sorry I forgot to mention this in my other post.  I connected the trailer yesterday, 99 Westlake, I have running lites, but no brake lites or directionals.  Any ideas.  Can it be a fuse, or something else

Thanks

Does your tow vehicle have integral brake-turn signals, or separate brake lights (red) and turn signals (yellow) in the rear?

My first reaction is "you have a bad ground," but if that were true, then the running lights would not work either.

Have you checked the bulbs to make sure they are still good?  It would be unlikely that they would both go bad at the same time, but if it's been a while since you checked them, then one may have been bad for a while and the other just recently blew.

I would say short in wiring and then it caused a blown fuse. A matter of tracing it down. Start by finding blown fuse then bad wire. Ussually at connector on tow vehicle.

The only fuse would, more than likely, be the TV's fuse. If that fuse were blown, the TV lights wouldn't work. Most people don't bother putting trailer light fuses on the trailer.

I would take a test light and see if you have power to the TVs connector. If you do, you know that you have a problem at the trailer somewhere. If you don't (and the TV lights are working) you have a problem with the wiring in or too the connector on the TV.

I have found that most trailer wiring problems occur right inside one of the 2 (or both) connectors. It's usually a loose or corroded wire. Disconnecting and cleaning usually repairs those issues.

The second most common issue is usually the bulbs or bulb sockets. They are cheaply made and corrode easily. You might try taking a little sand paper to the metal part of the bulbs and the inside of the sockets.

this may sound crazy, but here goes.i have an 06 jeep commander.they installed the hitch a month or two before we bought our PUP.i went to pick up the PUP and only brake lights would work.the PUP dealer checked everything out and said it was the vehicle.i called the stealership and they said bring it in right of way.it turns out that the computer has to be set to accept the harness which also enables the the tow /haul feature and a number of other functions in the jeep.i,m told that several other D/C vehicles are like this .

First, check the ground. Could be grounding thru turn wires. Any trailer lite trouble involveing more than one lamp CHECK THE GROUND, that's where most of the problems will be. I have a cheap cable (sold to fool poeple as jumpstart) that I hook from tractor frame to trailer frame. If the problem doen't go away then I look for other things.

Take the covers off both your lights and clean and tighten your ground wire. Should be the only wire visable that is screwed in next to the bulb socket. They come lose very easily.

Most of my trailer towing light failures over the years have been traced to a short someplace!

I'm not too far from the ocean (2 1/2 miles) and that may have an effect on the Starcraft's "connections". Every so often I pull all the fuses and put them right back in place.
