Alot of you have probably had these, but I hadn't until this past weekend.  They're outstanding.

1/4 Pound Hamburger Patty
Onions
2 Slices Tomatoes
Sliced Potatoes
Salt & Pepper
Montreal Steak Seasoning

Stack the ingredients in Foil.  Wrap up and seal at top....looks like a Hobo bag!

Cook over the fire until meat is cooked....about 30 minutes.

It's fast, easy, and delicious.

Actually, only one version of the hobo dinners.  I usually use, hamburg, pototos, carrots, onions, s&p to taste enjoy.

But I have also seen people add peppers, tomatoes, celery etc.

I have also heard of, but don't have a specific recipe for chicken hobos.

What we used to call "Hobo Dinner" was everyone would bring enough hamburger for their family and 2 more people, plus a can or 2 of "Something" (Usually some mixture of veggies and/or tomato sauce) to throw into a common pot. That would be heated over the campfire and served the way it is.

It would turn out really good 90% of the time.

That sounds more like stone soup to me.   :book:

We do a buffet type serving of hobos. We put out hamburger, diced chicken, onions, sliced potatoes, sliced carrots, cut up broccoli spears and any other choices we think of and let each person build their own hobo. We use Italian dressing to pour over all the ingredients. Then seal up the foil and cook on the coals about 15 min. per side.

Salt and pepper, then yum!

The Reynolds web site has lots of suggestions for foil meals. Lots of different names for these. We make chicken meals using minute Rice , chicken, zuchinni, chicken broth, dried basil and stewed tomatoes.Moose

You or someone near to you wouldn't happen to be the product of a Waldorf Education, maybe.  You don't hear "stone soup" very often!!!!

We typically use chicken and precook it at home with some butter.  Then just place that in the foil with veggies and cook.  That way the veggies stay as crisp as we want and don't burn.

My version, which I have been using since my Girl Scout days, is the following:

Hamburger patty (as big or small as you want it)
Onion
Potatoes
Carrots
Mushrooms (added that as an adult)

While forming the patty, I add Montreal Steak Seasoning. I slice the Potatoes into 1/8" slices, halve then quarter the onion, and slice the carrots as thin as I can get them. Since my ingredients are fresh (raw), it takes a bit longer to cook (I just use canned mushrooms). I then take the tin foil (I use the Reynold's Heavy Duty) and spray it with Pam (or similar). Place a few potatoes, carrots & mushroom slices on the foil, then top with the patty. I continue to cover the sides & top with the veggies, and put the onion quarters at the "corners". Then I put even more seasoning on it, just in case!!! We used to put these directly on very hot coals, but now we have a grilling basket that we put the packages on. This makes it much easier to take out of the fire to flip. I usually flip them once at about 15 minutes and allow to cook another 15 minutes before checking. I don't like my hamburger meat pink at all, so it usually takes about 45 minutes, depending on the thickness of the hamburger. My veggies come out browned and absolutely delicious!! This recipe is a MUST as least once during a camping trip.

Sound's similar to my wife's " Shepard Pie".  Slightly browned hamburger lining the bottom of a pie tin, spoon on some tomato soup, put on a layer of green beans, top with mashed potatoes and finally  a grid of some American Cheese stips over the top.  Cover with foil and poke a hole in the top of the foil with afork.  Put on the fire until the cheese just starts to brown (usually about  20 mins).  Serves about 4 servings per pie.  We usually make 2 pies with  1 lb of burger, 1 can of soup,  1 can of beans, I box potato flakes, and 1/2 pack of cheese slices.

That sounds really good. Do you use condensed tomato soup like Campbell's, or do you use a "ready to serve" soup that is not condensed?

Just plain old Campbells condensed.  We've made it with regular tomato sauce and it wasn't as good as with the Campbells.  IMO.

BW ..we also make them in the oven at home the same way.

"Hobo dinner" is just what the name implies.
During the depression hobos would gather in the "jungles" at night. These jungles were close to the railroad the hobos would be traveling.
Everybody would pick up stuff during the day like steal a chicken, some corn or what ever, throw it all into a pot and everybody would partake.

I make something very close at home but I use brown gravy instead.
