I'm tallking about the PU.  But me too now that I think about it!  It's kind of funny how things are going with the PU.  We just bought it in March and since then DW has been trying to add things onto the thing and I have been trying to take things off.  Let me explain.  She has added a microwave (when there are hookups), some HEAVY camping chairs and is talking about getting a generator and also talking about a small raft or canoe which we would get a trolling motor for.  So for me who has to drive I have been looking for ways to offset all of these things.  I tow it without water now.  I took off one of my propane tanks cause I don't really need it.  I'm also trying to figure out how to drain the hot water tank (almost 50 lbs).  I'm also proud of myself for coming up with the latest idea, the best one I have had in a while.  We tow with a Honda Odyssey.  The two middle seats can be taken out pretty easy.  Each one of those must weigh 50 lbs or more!  The kids will then sit in the rear seat and I will put the gear in the middle of the van.  This will I think help with the weight and also keep the kids farther away from my ear.  They tend to get loud!  Good thinking right?

Another thing I plan to try is not having a full tank of gas right before I climb the mountains.

How about offloading your wi...uh, never mind, I never said that...  :D

You can install a drain valve that runs under the camper.  Use that to drain the HW heater.

For us, it's been the rear bench seat of the Astro.  I'll be those seats don't weigh as much as you think, though.

In some mountains, that means you'll get 2/3 of the way to the top.  :yikes:

If it was me, I'd take the trailer, loaded, to a nearby scale (find them at most truck stops) and get everything weighed.  Compare the weight to the spec, and either:

If it's under the rating, tell her if you go over, she's getting left behind.

or

If it's over, have her decide what MUST be left behind to get it under the spec.

If I told my wife to lose weight in the trailer - she would look at me and reply, "You first!"

LOL

I understand (for me, DW would mean I would go first, i.e. I would no longer be in the trailer  :( ), but the OP described already loosing weight in the trailer, so he could say "I already have."  :D

I was wondering about getting the PU weighed like you mention.  I would like to do that but feel a bit intimidated about pulling into a truck scale.

To make things even worse DW wants to take her Mom with us when we go down to San Diego.  I asked DW the other night how much her Mom weighs.  Not sure I wanted to go there but you know...I gotta know.  : )

Don't be.  They see it from time to time, and as long as you pay the fee, they'll tell you about each axle and the total.  They don't care if you're a little camper or an 18 wheeler.

Golly, some men just don't know when to shut up.  I'd be sleeping in a tent if I asked that... :(

You would get a tent?  I would be left behind.  LOL

I realized a looooong time ago, if I want my wife to bring less *stuff*, I must give her less room. My wife could fill her Suburban just to cross the street. :)

YAAAA...........and if she doesn't have it, she'll have to turn around and get it....Do you know what can happen to a woman trying to turn a Suburban around in the middle of the street....not to mention the danger that she would be in AND create for others if she can't find it :yikes:

You should be ASHAMED.....you big bully :swear:

I'm always amazed at the amount of crap (did I say that in my out loud voice?) people bring camping.  Honest, I swear by Paula Dean, you can get by for the weekend without a microwave.  What could you possibly need a microwave for that you can't wing it the old fashioned way?   This is camping -- you don't have to have all the comforts of home!!!!

Hmmmm . . . I see you are from California, come up north to Oregon and try camping in the spring.  The kids still want toasted marshmellows which the outdoor stove is for that - popcorn in the microwave versus the open fire -

In Oregon, when it rains, it pours!!!   ;)  ;)

Use to pride myself on "traveling light" ~ once upon a time I'd head out for the woods & river, with the canoe strapped to the roof of the car, a pup tent and an old G.I. duffle bag that carried everything ... a few raw potatoes, an onion or two, ONE pot to boil coffee/water or make stew in, a stamped metal frying pan, a couple cans of pork & beans, some sardines and a blanket to cover up with if needed. Half the time would sleep on the ground and only use the tent if was chilly or might rain. Yessiree, could set-up or break camp in 15 minutes!
And was, for the most part, a happy camper!

Now, with the camper, it's a struggle to keep from adding some new thing to aid in my "comforts"! By the time the canoe is lashed to the top of the camper, the camper's GVWR is at hand!
