From readind the thread I assume a lot of you folks are NOT from south Florida. Well guess what I am and I'm also new at this PUP thing. Unfortunately I do not have a garage large enough to store my new to me PUP. My question and concern is what precautions and safe guards should I be considerring now that hurricane season is here. Am I SOL and be glad it is insured. I was thinking about putting some anchors in the ground so that I could tie a few straps to it. I really dont think the wind will get it it is all the flying debris that will destroy it. Any suggestions?

I guess the tie downs would help if a hurricane came through and you got hit with the high winds.  But other than a garage, I don't know what you could possibly do to protect it from the debris.  If you had the space and it wasn't against the law or HOA rules, you could build a small garage just big enough for the pup out of cinder blocks, but that's about it.  I wouldn't think that the portable shelters wouldn't stand up to the wind or debris.

The best advice I can give is to ensure that it's insured, and to check that policy to ensure that there isn't some loop hole so it doesn't cover hurricane damage.  Don't keep anything in there that can't be replaced.  And most of all, as much as that pup means to you, remember it's just a thing, and things can be replaced.

Let me see if I got this right..
You are worried about a heracaine killing your camper? My memery win't up in smoke in the '60s but I think I saw somthing on the news a couple of years ago about not waiting to see what the wind is going to blow away but GET THE BELL OUT OF THE WAY! IF you are going to stay gone for a few days why not take the camper with you so you have somplace to stay?

If you have to leave it in harm's way, put the stabilizers down.

I live 80 miles from New Orleans and have been through numerous hurricanes in my life. We were here when Katrina hit and were very fortunate. I have to say the next time I see a monster like that enter the Gulf, I am hooking up my pop-up and heading to Arkansas.

I think if another comes through, it's time to hitch up and go camping--somewhere else! My pop up and boat stay in the garage fortunately but don't know how it would hold up if kept outside- maybe along side the house close to the wall? We survived 3 direct hits (Charlie, Frances and Jean) and have had enough hurricanes!
