86 Coleman Sequioa Lift system inop

A friend of mine just called me in a panic.He has a 86 Coleman Sequioa
and the lift system is stuck in the up position.Handle feels very loose,either direction and no response.
Does anybody have any experience or suggestions,in regards to the lift system or possible a pdf manual ? I searched all the posts,but the pdf was no longer available.
I am planning on stopping by my friends house tommorrow and check it out,to get a better idea of what may be broken. I have a 2000 Coleman Cheyenne myself and from what  he is telling me the lift systems are different.
Any help would be appreciated

Thank you very much,that manual is very helpful.
The top was stuck in the up position and would not come back down,no response on the crank handle.,which is in the front on this pop up.
He removed the cover and some pieces fell out.I checked to make sure the cables ,etc. are ok and was able to lower and raise the roof.
But the automatic safety that keeps the roof in place in case you let the handle go, is not operating.For now he can use the manual stop for his weekend trip and when he gets back,will take it apart and repair properly,now that I have a better idea of what it looks like in there.
