We usually stay in the camper for on-the-road overnighters.  Set up only what is needed.  Don't hook up anything but electric.  No awning, chairs or other outside stuff.  Eat out, or eat very simply in.  Our kids are old enough to help with setup and tear down so that helps keep those times to a minimum.

We will consider a hotel if it is raining, or we've been camping somewhere without showers.  :)

Fort Wilderness is awesome.  I stayed there several times when I was a kid, and absolutely loved it!  I think you'll have a great time there!

I don't like dirty hotels so we end up paying a lot of money for one of the higher end chains if we do stay in a hotel. We're not snobs, but I've usually found the $40-50 hotels to not be the cleanest and I just can't get a good night's sleep if I'm in a bed that I don't think is too clean. So that makes the cost of a campground much less and that's why we usually just camp. If someone doesn't mind a cheap hotel then that would probably be much easier.

I also get used to sleeping in the PUP after a few days so it's less of a disturbance to continue sleeping in it as compared to switching over to a hotel. Again, depending on your family's sleeping habits that may or not be a consideration.

It is indeed a hassle to setup after a long day of driving and we make sure that we barely take anything out of the PUP. Works really well, and on a long trip we'll set the shower up every other night.

I know you're going to do as you please. When I set up I want to stay. If we're driving across Kansas or Nebraska or SD on our way to a cool mountain campground I want to spend as little time in those places as possible. I want to put the miles behind me, stay at the wheel and get there.
Its a bit more strainuous on long trips to tow the pup anyway. When we stop for the night I want to have supper, crack a beer and kick back....that means a motel.
When we get to our destination THEN I want to set up with the awning out and all the other stuff I've acquired for my comfort in place.

Good point!  DW and I typically don't sleep well the first night in a hotel.  We bring along a "sound machine" which does seem to help.

There's nothing quite like your own bed!  :D

We are planning to make a trip from Central Texas to Disney's Fort Wildnerness in June 2008.  Can't wait to hear about your trip and would love to see photos of the campground.

On your question, I agree with some of the other replies: It depends on the speed of your trip.  We are leaving Wednesday for Colorado from Central Texas.  We will stop in Raton, NM (12 hour+ drive).  We will stay in a hotel and finish off the drive the next day with a shorter drive and set-up at the CO campground.  On our way back we plan to take our time and camp at Palo Duro State Camp (Texas) for a couple of nights.  That will leave us with a eight to nine hour drive home from there.

Have fun at WDW in October.
