Check out //www.geocaching.com.

While we are camping at new places, geocaching has taken us to very intresting locations that we would have known nothing about without seeking local geocaches.

Locals, proud of their local area, have placed geocaches (or identified virtual or earth caches) at their favorite locations to take us to interesting sites.  For example, we have found a little hidden Civil War battlefield, mass grave, and monument, a unique cemetery where Revolutionary War soldiers were buried in Indiana, the furthest west "marine" battle of the revolutionary war (on the Wabash River), and historic locks, dams, and lock keepers houses on the Kentucky River, also fossil beds, waterfalls, and great mountain overlooks.

These caches are often hidden at locations not "developed" (no gift shops, admittance fees, or other economic benefit to the local community). Therefore, no local websites, tourism guides, or community directories are likely to let you know that they are there.

Admittedly, many caches are hidden at somewhat uninteresting places, but the challenge of the search, and for some, scoring large numbers of finds becomes the excitement.  And, it's just another way to enjoy the outdoors when camping, another activity to mix in with the bicycling, fishing, hiking, pitching horseshoes, swimming, crafting, stargazing, hunting, etc.

And, as I see you are from Asheville, a cache just above the Grove Park Inn took me up a great road that I certainly would have never known about otherwise.
