Any recommendations for a good place to camp in or near San Antonio?  Looking for minimum water/elec, RR & showers in a fairly decent location.  Any suggestions, reports appreciated.  Thinking of maybe going in February or March, the Good Lord willin  and the crik don t rise.

Thot:  Anyone know if any of the military bases in SA have campgrounds?  I m retired Navy so that could be an option.

 Thanks!

WayfarerHey Wayfarer,  I know there is a military campground on Canyon Lake near New Braunfels.  I think it is run by the Army Corp of Engineers.  Don t recall the name but drove to the entrance once.  A little further up the lake is a Corp of Engineers park named Potter s Creek.  It has w/e sites and very clean bath houses in the new section.  Only problem is two years ago it was first come first serve.  You may be able to reserve through reserve america now.  I highly recommend it. Beautiful park on a beautiful lake.  If you camp there, shoot for the new section as it is up in the trees.

WayfarerGuadalupe River State Park isn t too far from San Antonio, off to the West a bit.  Just north of SA is Palmetto SP (pictures in the 2002 sections on my website).  Palmetto is one of our favorites, located on the San Marcos river.

WayfarerThere s a website that lists military camping facilities throught the world....I had it on my favorites list, but it has disappeared.  (Read that:  DH " cleaned up"  the list!)  You can probably find without much trouble.  We have used the Military Living (www.militaryliving.com) publication named Military RV, Camping and Rec Areas and found it to be fairly accurate.  The book we have is quite old, but new ones are available at the Exchange or on their website.  My book lists Canyon Lake (Randolph AFB), Randolph Off-Base Rec Area, Brooks Famcamp, and Kelly Famcamp, which was scheduled to close in 2001.  Hope this helps.

WayfarerHave just made reservations for 24-28 Feb at the Fort Sam Houston campground.  Ft Sam is the nearest  of military campgrounds to downtown (is just about in downtown).  The office said you can usually just come in and find space during the week but should always make reservations for weekends or around holidays.  If you come w/o reservations they have an " overflow"  area (shared water, no E/S on ground) where you can popup for the night and then hope for a spot next day.  Will post report following trip.

Appreciate all the input about San Antonio.
