Last weekend we were up staying in a cabin by Steamboat Lake for four days.  I have been up there many times in the winter and for day trips in the summer, but we decided last weekend to look into reserving a camp site for a week in July to take up the popup.

I looked on-line a couple days ago and found out most of the campsites up there will be closed this YEAR and won't open until 2010 due to dead trees from pine beatle kill.  See http://parks.state.co.us/Parks/SteamboatLake/Conditions/

The same holds true for Pearl Lake which is only a couple miles from Steamboat Lake.  See http://parks.state.co.us/Parks/PearlLake/Conditions/

This past week I talked to a National Forest Ranger and he was telling me that campgrounds from Southern New Mexico to Canada will be closing, some for several years, starting this spring for the cleanup of trees killed by Mountain Pine Beetle.  The problem with dead trees in the mountain region is enormous!  In most mountain areas of Colorado, what was green three years ago is now 90% brown (dead trees).

So, check first before heading out to your favorite camp places in the Rocky Mountains.

Birdman,

If you are still interested in Steamboat Lake, you might want to check out the reservation system again.  I heard that their logging operations are ahead of schedule.

Thanks for the update.  I checked today and there are some sites that have availability, but no lakefront sites.  Of course these are (were) also the most wooded sites.

I will keep an eye on this.

Thanks!
