I am trying to get my brother and sisternlaw into the PU world...he has found a 1999 12 Jayco Popup Camper w/ slide out for $3180...and wants to know if this is a good deal???  Assuming that it passes inspection, is it a good deal??
Thanx for helping one newbie recruit a newer-bie.

Check it out at NADAguides.com

Price sounds a little high to me, but I didn't check it out at the above website.

There's nothing like finding a mint conditioned used popup at a bargin price, but alas, those happenings are far and few between! Usually when someone has a real sharp, clean popup for sale they are trying to get top dollar for it. Same for the dealers and usually they'll keep that unit on the lot until they get the profit out of it they're looking for.

So you have your cream puff, excellent campers, those that are in a so-so good condition, and then the remainder where much leaves to be desired. Bottom line is every used camper has to stand on it's own wheels. If I where looking for a popup and found about what I was looking for, I'd pay a top dollar for a cream puff, who would'nt? But if it's a so-so, middle of the road conditioned camper, then the price had better be right. So you do have the NADA RV as a sort of guide, same for the bid postings on eBay, but in the end it's going to be what your willing to pay for whatever camper it is your looking at.

The big problem with buying new is that your looking at a big depreciation just as soon as you tow it off the lot. But on the other hand, if one was to keep that camper for a lot of years, you could get get your money's worth out of it by wear, tear and enjoyment. I have a '99 Starcraft that I bought new the first of '00, it was a left over model, just what I was looking for, and got hefty discount as compared to what I'd had to pay for an identical 2000 model. To me, it was worth it; plus I got a new unit warranty. So far the little bugger is still going strong and we've been down lots of road together!
