My kids are on spring break the week of March 17th. Living in Minnesota camping here is still out of the question, but how far south would we need to travel to get into the more seasonally warmer weather. We have a furnace and small heater on board, so we can handle some cooler temps in the evenings etc.

Any camp grounds recommendations also welcome.

Unfortunately, from where you are you would probably need to travel South of Memphis, TN, to find temps in the mid 50's during March.

I'm in South Carolina, and our temps are 25-35 at night and 50-60 in the day right now. If we get a snow it's usually during january/February.

I'll wait unitl night temps average in the 40's before we'll camp in the
PUP, which would be around March.

I'm sure we're quite aways out of your driving range for the Spring Break holiday.

Arkansas can be good during that time and it can be bad during that time.   Texas is probably your best bet.  You just need to watch the weather.

PLJ,

Drive straight down 35. Like posted above you probably have to head into Texas past the hill country. The only problem, it can be the rainy season. We went to San Antonio area about 2 yrs ago during spring break. It was chilly and off and on rain. Not as chilly as MN, I remember well since I lived in Mankato for 23 yrs. It was still a nice time there and lots to see.

Mary,

What campground did you stay at in San Antonio, I have wanted to pull my pup to San Antonio but wasn't able to find a campground I was comfortable with. I lean toward state parks and more primitive campgrounds versus rv parks and jellystone type campgrounds. I would love to hear what your experience was.

My parents were winter Texans for many years and I dreamed of the time when my kids could last longer in the car so we could head down to see them during spring break.  Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen ... my dad died Thanksgiving of 2006 and mom isn't up to doing the trip by herself.

They always stayed at Mustang Island State Park on the Gulf Coast near Port Aransas.

Happy planning!

Hey Cajun camper,
Unfortunately there are no state parks directly in S.A but there are several in the area that are an hour or two away. Guadalupe river SP is nice and rustic, Kerrville SP is ok, Garner SP is the crown jewel of the TX state park system. It is a great park with a wonderful cold tubing river though it is a ways out from SA and you have to book real early.
We like to stay in Bastrop SP which is 35 miles south of Austin. It has the famous lost pines and is a nice hilly area with great walking trails and a golf course if you are in to that sort of thing. There are a few other SP north of Austin that are nice too.
We also stay at McKinney falls SP that is on the west edge of Austin close to I-35. It is not that far to SA from Austin -1.5 hrs. You might like that place. It is easy to get in and out of and has nice camp sites.

Kelly, so sorry to hear about your dad. I remembered you talking about your parents trips to Rockport and thought about that when I was at Rockport in January for an art educators teacher conference. I drove through  Goose Island SP taking pics on my way back home after the conf.
Maybe you can bring the kids down when they are old enough and back track along your parents camp route. I know they would enjoy this area.

Cajuncamper,

Bastrop is a beautiful park but you are up in the pines. It will be a little cooler. We stayed in Lockhart where my brother lives and manages the airport. We used that as our command central. It is a small park, it does have a golf course, small playground, creek and some hiking. We stayed in the circle with full hookups. We were there for a week. San Antonio was about 50 min from Lockhart. It was a clean and quiet park so it worked well for us. We also took a trip to San Marco's airport where they have WWII planes on exhibit in the hangars. There were scenes taken there from the movie "The Aviator."

We don't care for RV type parks either. When we travel we tend to stay at different state parks to get a flavor of each state.

I hope this helps.
