I'm just new in this forum so maybe the subject has been addressed before.  I have a 2002 Rockford with a 12 foot box.  It has a Carefree of Colorado awning on it.  This awning rolls down from the soft, zippered case.  This rascal is definately at least a two person job to handle.  All the material is rolled up on the piece that's in your hands and you unroll it as you move farther away from the camper until its all the way out.  Then you have to dink with the poles which extend and hopefully lock in place when they're at the lenth you want. (assuming the pole adjustment pieses don't pop out and fly into the grass).

I don't mess with it anymore.  Is there such a thing as a simple awning that just pulls out from the camper like a window shade?  I can rig up my own poles and ropes if necessary.

Thanks

Hi and welcome!
Take a look at Wavery's post in the bargain hunter's forum.  He's found an excellent awning and has photos as well as the seller's ebay link.

Welcome to PUT!  Yes they do make an awning like what you want.  Check out Carefree of Colorado's web site.:)

Thanks guys, I'll be checking them out.

I had the type of awning that you pulled out, and I just hated it.  I tore my rotator cuff pulling it out...it was awful to put away too, so I got rid of it.  I got another Carefree of Colorado Campout awning and I love it.  I had put one on my old Jayco and loved it.  I have no trouble unrolling or rolling it up by myself, but it is much easier with 2 people. The legs work best if you mark them with a marker where you want to extend them out to.  Don't give up on it yet, try working with it a little longer, as the rollup can type of awnings are very pricey.
It helps to pop the roof only halfway up, then set up the awning, then continue to raise the roof all the way.  Works the same way when taking down the awning....much easier to be able to work it at waist level.

Since I have HersheyGirl's old Jayco I also have her "old" Carefee of Colorado Campout awning.  I love it.  I can set it up and take it down all by myself.

I do something similar to what HG suggested ... I raise the roof about halfway and then unroll the awning.  I Just let it hang while the roof is raised the rest of the way.  Then I attach one leg to the side of the camper and then the other leg.  Then I extend the legs to the desired length.  Finally I adjust the supports out from the roof.  (And add the third support when I remember!)  I do have to stand on a cooler to get these tight ... but we alway have one with us.   :p

It's a vast improvement over the bag awning I had on my old camper.  We never used it.  Now we put the awning out every trip ~ even the short weekends.

Your Carefree awning is actually quite similar to my awning. Set-up just takes practice and some getting used to. I put ours up by myself now. The 1st couple times, my wife had to help me. Now she just sits around and watches..... :p (don't tell her I said that  :yikes: )

There is a company that makes the pull out awnings for PUs. However, I've never seen one. They are heavy and require drilling holes in the roof and brackets on the camper body. From what I've heard, it makes raising your roof a little more complicated and if you mess up, it can damage your camper.

Well then, maybe I outta give that rascal another chance.  Thanks for the encouragement.  :)
