I own a Chevy Silverado and now a Jayco 1206 pop up.  What is the best way to attach the break away cable from the pop-up back to the Siverado?

MotherNature

Not sure if this is the right way or not, but our dealer suggested that we make the breakaway cable slightly more in length (like maybe 2"?) than the safety chains.  They recommended looping the cable throughout the chains in such a way (don't have a pic to share but you get the idea) that if the chains were to break, the resulting tension on the cable would activate the breakaway switch.

That said, ours somehow broke - I think that one of the boys snagged his foot in it while taking the 'shortcut' between the camper and TV (of course, "It did it itself" and "gee, it must be defective" :eyecrazy: !.  I am going to post a thread in the 'Fix It' to see how to repair.

I use a small screw type chain link, a small carabiner would work also. In Cali, you can not hook the breakaway cable to the receiver, it should be hooked to the truck - check your state regs. On my Chevy bumper, there's a small support brace under the chrome portion with a hole in it just the right size for the link.

Once hooked, I make a half loop in the wire and slip it through a link on the safety chain. That way it's up out of the way and if a seperation does occur, the loop will slip out of the link.

HTH  :-)

With surge brakes, this might be of some useful information ~

I attach my break away brake switch to the receiver on the TV.  I am not required to have a switch on my PU, but I have one. :)
