I have not posted a message here in quite some time.
And,I am hoping that you will allow a short story to encourage all those who have lost all hope in the country we grew up in.(Oprah lovin' liberals, who revise history aren't  going to like this).
A couple of days ago,I was driving through a town called Geneva,Ohio. At this time I witnessed the most wonderful sight(nearly brought tears).Northbound on state route 534 about a half mile south of town, where the sidewalks are broken like most families, two full blooded American 12 year olds were racing on skateboards in tee shirts and blue jeans(FULL OUT)!!!NO helmets, NO knee pads, just guts!!!!America bless God,and God bless America!!!!
This is a sign that it's not over yet!!!

A great observation...the true and old American way,,,Won't find any kids like that in my neighborhood. Around here they are mostly over weight, lazy and addicted to video games and cell phones..Go out doors and play? Nope...might get sweaty and dirty, Heaven forbid...Heaviest thing they pick up other than a cell phone or ipod is probably a Big Mac with an extra large order of fries....

We have lived in the house we're in for about 6 years and very near our home is an open lot that the owner keeps cut. I always thought that when I was a kid, that lot would have been our football field, baseball field, kite flying field you name it, but I never saw any kids taking advantage of it. Last year on a cool November day, I drove by and saw about 15 boys out there playing tackle football and their bikes all laying down at the edge of the lot. Since then, I notice that from time to time I see those boys out there doing what boys were designed to do, running, tackling, throwing frisbees and balls and just being boys. It is nice to see.

I agree that while it's nice to see kids out playing I don't think that fact that they weren't wearing helmets makes it that much better. If you have ever known anyone that has had a kid that suffered brain damage you would think a little differently.

I agree with you AZsix. When I was a kid back in the 60's very few people wore seatbelts and we kids moved about the interior of the car without ever being strapped in. How nuts was that?

In our neighborhood kids play hard and laugh a lot. They're playing baseball and football and riding bikes, scooters and skateboards. But they're smart enough to wear helmets. (And for those who say, "We didn't have all that safety stuff and WE survived!" I remind them that those who DIDN'T survive aren't here to talk about it.)

Yeah!  There is hope!

We are lucky to live in a neighborhood where "active" is normal, and even "extreme" is rather common.  Any day of the week you will find all ages skateboarding, sailing, running, bicycling, swimming, tennis, kitesurfing, windsurfing very actively around here.

This public skatepark is in the park adjacent to my house.  The neighborhood kids post these on YouTube!  The racing you described above is a common sight almost every morning as the younger kids ride their boards on the way to school! :U

This older 2002 video at the same park could have been on one of those funny video shows! !

Last weekend we saw three boys on their bikes with fishing poles off to one of the area retention ponds. Hope they were able to get their hooks wet before the security guards chased them off.
