Hello
We will be picking up a new 2008 toyota sienna tomorrow.  But heres my question.  It already comes with a class 1 hitch already installed.  So i think i cant tow my 2000 coleman cheyenne with the class 1 hitch.  And its not wired for the electric brakes.  How hard would it be to change out the the class 1 hitch and replace it with a class 2.  Does anybody know if a toyota sienna can handle a class 2 hitch, just worried if it would scrap the ground.  The toyota sienna has a tow rating of 3400 pounds, so thats ok.  Just wondering if the class 2 would fit the van.  Thanks

What is the weight of your trailer?  Are you  sure that it isn't a class II hitch that is included?  A class II receiver is rated for 3000 pounds, but you need to get your brakes wired.:)

yes just found out that it is a 2 class.  Now im just worried that the van will scrap while towing the pup.  The van seems pretty low to the ground.  Maybe im just used to the suv we had

What is the gross weight of the trailer?  You might want to install a class III hitch.:)

if you have rear sag that you are worrying about scraping, you have a problem.  get tongue weighed.  limit is most likely 350# on your vehicle.

look at whether you can install a weight distributing hitch (like a reese mini 350). this will help with the sag.  check the trailer manual to ensure it can have a WDH - sometimes they void the warranty (may bend trailer frame, if frame not built for it).

get trailer weighed - know your weights!

good luck - ask more questions

Is not the class II rated for 3500 lbs ...?

Although I'd prefer a class III because it's simply a more heavy duty hitch, but since the Toyota already comes with a II, it will handle that Cheyenne just fine.

My previous TV was an '00 GMC Sonoma and it had a fantastic tow rating of 6400 lbs. However, you had to read the fine print ... with a weight bearing hitch, like a class III, it was rated only for 3500 lbs. For higher weights, a WD hitch was required.

I have a Honda Odyssey (minivan) I tow with.  I had the same problem you are dealing with.  I got a weight distribution hitch and it helps a lot.  I still sag a little but not bad.

Even though it helps out a lot, I'm still thinking of replacing my shocks with more heavy duty ones.  The stock ones are so wimpy and soft.

Also be prepared to go through some brakes.  I've had to replace pads every year.  And last year they had to turn the rotors.  I expect next time I'll be in for new rotors.

You said the Sienna came with a hitch.  Does that mean you got the tow package?  Check.  Because if not, you will need other things as well.  Like a transmission cooler.

Dray you should consider ceramic front brake pads and do they make an air shock for the rear?  If so, that might be a good option.  Otherwise, KYB Gas-Adjust would be excellent.
