The rain had stopped and we were on our way.....about 5 miles from the camp site i heard a terrible clunk and holy @#$%%5 the wheel had fallen off...Soooooo very thankful that i was only going about 10 mph...and was not 20 feet farther down the road on a hair pin turn......the bolts came off and the tire had stuck in the wheel well..breaking out the floor a little and cracking the wheel well....YIKES!!!...Thank goodness for good symaritans....a young man and wife stopped to help.......and another couple drove back to the city and bought us new bolts...Bless there hearts...Got the wheel back on and they followed us to the camp site.......It was there final destination also. So we got set up and bought him some cold ones and thanked him several more times. After that all was great.......Stopped about 6 times on the way home to check the nuts and they stayed tight....so i guess the job for this week is getting a new hub. i will post pix in another thread....

I'm still jealous that you can go camping there this time of year as I sit and watch the snowflakes falling here. Glad to hear your project is now road ready, and the "maiden voyage" was almost uneventful. I had a similar problem two years ago after replacing the tires on our Dutchmen. Luckily we only went to a campground several miles away, and I had the sense to check the lugs after arriving because a few had loosened up.

Sundawg,

I'm so sorry to read about your misfortune.  I'm glad no one got hurt and there was minimal damage.

In addition to getting a new hub, I would encourage you to get a torgue wrench and torque the lug nuts to the prescribe settings.  To help you here is a photogallery with instructions.

Hope this helps.

You'll find torque information in the Drexter Axle Service Manual starting on page 70.

Also not, the wide range of final torque! Such precision!
