Anyone have recommendations for CG in Big Sur?  Thinking of making this our stop on the way back from the Smithwoods rally.  Maybe two or three nights.  Hookups would be helpful.  At least elec.

THANKS

Responded to your post in Nor Cal, too.

I just googled Big Sur camping and a lot of info came up.
We were thinking about Ventana Campground at one point, but their web site said that they were closed for the 2008 season.  There is phone number to call on their site, maybe call and see if they are open for business.

A recent Wall Street Journal article indicted that they may not open this year.

Who might not open this year?  The Ventana Campground?
What is the reason?

Oh, I was going to post about this last week. I really want to get up to Big Sur this summer also, but our favorite campground, Ventana, still seems to be closed after last years remodel and then the fires. I found a thread on another board saying that they would not know when they'd be reopening until after this years rainy season (I'm guessing sometime this spring). I keep checking the website though in hopes of some info. The recording, when you call, just refers to their website.

As far as any other campgrounds go, I don't have first hand experience with any. I've heard Pfeiffer Big Sur SP is good, and has some hook-ups, and beach access. The majority of state campgrounds have no hook-ups. My s-i-l was looking and found a few sites still open at Big Sur Campground (private), but from what I've read, it's a parking lot; sites right on top of another.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. =s

No one else has been to any of the Big Sur campgrounds??

The ones that I have been to do not have electricity at the camp sites.  Beautiful area but no power at sites.

My vote is Pfiffer(sp?)  AMAZING, but no hookups.  Buy a generator...haha

This is an amazing campground...but, not sure how it did in the fires.

Good luck...

my underatanding is that its closed because of the fires.  And we really wanted hookups.  It would probab;y be full by now anyway.  We will still check out the beach, it is supposed to be really neat.

Last year after the Lopez Lake rally we camped for a couple of nights at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park right after it reopened following the fires.  Our campsite was right on the river and in the redwoods.  Other than seeing signs of the fire driving up the coast, there was no evidence in the campground.  This is our absolute favorite campground even though there are no hookups.  There are water spickets pretty close to all the campsites so we were able to keep our tank full.  They have ranger led campfire programs and a Junior Ranger program that my kids love.  We love to bike ride in the campground and we also recommend a trip to the Big Sur Beach---gorgeous.  Just watch out for the poison oak.  There are also some fun restaurants and shops in town.  A stop at Nepenthe just for the view is definitely worth it.
