my pup came with a fridge and an icebox/cooler ......my icebox works very well for keeping water cold and other foods chilled.......which free up my other cooler for the essentials......beer and such spirits....lol

I had an ice box in my first PU.  I would put a block of ice in the ice pan.  Put the ice pan near the top of the fridge.  Mine had a small spout on the ice pan that you could drain ice cold water from the ice pan into a cup.  Over all it worked very well at keeping food cold.  I did go through more ice than i do now.  You could also lay the ice box down like a cooler.  That way the cold did not run out when you opened the door.:)

Welcome to PUT smoecamper-
This is the same set up in our pup, just an ice box/cooler. There is a tray on top with a drain hose going out the bottom of the cooler through the floor of the pup to drain on the ground. The ice goes on the top shelf, the food on the bottom. For your meats and dairy products this works well as long as the door is not opened often. We usually freeze any meat before a trip, which helps too.
This spring I plan to remove this icebox and replace it with one of those dorm fridges. We never camp w/o electric, so paying $100 for a small fridge vs $600+ for a 3-way gas/elec/DC fridge is my choice. We will still carry a cooler too, as always, for the drinks and other items too big for the fridge.
