Attaching Kayak to Pop Up Top

Hello everyone,
First post here. I've just gotten an older Palomino, in great shape. We have a sit on top kayak and I'd like to know if anyone out there has tied down one on top of the Pop Up, or if you think this might cause a problem in transit. I'm very anxious to hear what you all have to say.

We have towed our 2002 Coleman Tacoma PU with the kayak on top. It was rather a hassle because most of the time we had to put it on top of the TV to take it to the water anyway. You end up putting it on the trailer, taking it off the trailer to set-up, put it on the TV to go to the water, put it back on the trailer to go home. We now just mount the kayak on top of the TV when we leave home. It's a lot less hassle.

We just put 2 closed-cell foam rubber blocks under the back and one under the front (to protect the roof) and it rides perfectly.

Can you please explain what you mean by "TV"??

Correct.....TV=Tow Vehicle. It all depends on the configuration of your TV though. Heck, we've even put our kayak on our old Toyota Camry.........

Would mounting directly to the roof of a pop-up potentially damage the roof?

The other option would be a pair of load bars that span full width of the pop-up roof, and have brackets that are mounted to the side walls of the roof.

Not likely. My kayak weighs about 60#. That puts about 30# on either end of the roof. That's far from being a strain on most any PU.

I tied my kayak to the back bumper and the tongue and just had the kayak rest on closed-cell foam blocks. It worked fine but it was a hassle.

when I put my new Jayco popup in 02, they installed the Pro Rac kayak bars and cradles for me.  think I paid about $400...what a waste of money.  Used them once...

as they said...you have to take it off to raise the top...and unless you have a site on the water with the option to put in right there...you have to put it on the TV to take it there...
