Usually with a tape measure........ :p

A trailer, be it a utility trailer, boat trailer, RV Etc. Is measured from the rear farthest protrusion (usually the back bumper) to the tip of the trailer tongue.

What DMV, storage lots and the campgrounds want to know is the FULL length of the trailer.....that is......how much space will it take up while parked, with nothing over-hanging the space allotted.

The interesting part comes when you are measuring a PopUp trailer because you have one length while towing and a different length when popped up. This usually only concerns the campgrounds because they want to be sure that your 16' trailer isn't sticking 5' out into the driving lane, when popped up in a 16' parking space (this would be pretty rare).

Agreed wavery -- I think campgrounds look for the length of the trailer when popped, storage locations look for closed length including tongue, and general classification of popups use the length of the box not including the tongue (8', 10', 12', etc).
