Although Memorial Day is still some months off, we are already thinking about our annual pilgrimage to Paso Robles for the Great Western Bicycle Rally.
This will be our 13th year at this rally. We keep going back because we always have such a great time. If any of you are looking for a place to go with the kids and have a great time, please visit the website above.

This is NOT a hard core, ride 'til you die, bike race.

This is a family event with plenty of activities for the kids including a bicycle roadeo, a clinic to get your kids off the training wheels, a "Huffy Toss" open to all ages and other activities. There is also some great riding through the vineyards surrounding Paso Robles. Rides range from 5 miles in length up to 100 miles or more. (Haven't done anything more than 25 miles or so in years myself -- too many wineries to visit. :D)

There is open camping, first come - first served, for a flat rate of $35/night for families, $15/night for individuals. Some hookups are available for $20 for the weekend.

I expect Recumbentman will be there as we've met up there the past few years. If you like to ride bikes and are looking for something different to do over Memorial Day Weekend, come join us.

Looks like those of you going to this will have lots of fun and the scenery is really pretty.......post pic's

Hey Brain
good luck on getting anyone to attend. I tried before, no takers. Lori (griffsmom) is a bike rider, but I couldn't talk her into it. Maybe at Newport dunes you can get her tipsy and get her to talk her husband (Dave) into going.  :D
Glad to see that you are getting more involved with the sccamper 's and hope to see you at a camp-out before memorial day weekend. we will be at the Great Western for sure  :-()

Well, that's a shame. But I'll try to look at the bright side if no one else can join us. There will be more room at the tasting counters for us!!
That's right! There are a lot of tasting rooms to visit with some fantastic wines to sample. The Rally organizers even host a wine tasting at the rally on Saturday night at no extra charge! Some come on up and get a little riding in between your bottles of wine!!

Sounds like fun to me...we were actually thinking about camping at the Wine Country RV Park in Paso Robles on Memorial Weekend...maybe we'll check this out instead.

Well, being as this was our 13th year, there must be something that keeps us going back.

We had a great time as usual. Glenna joined us in her popup (ask her about backing it in) and we had another friend in his Hi-Lo. Plus our nephew and his wife in a tent. We rode about 100 miles over 3 days, ate too much, drank too much and had a blast. Ran in to Brad and Mary several times. (They always seemed to have wine glasses in their hands. :D )

We brought back about 2 1/2 cases of wine. Chances are some of that will make it up to Pt. Mugu next month. Found a really remarkable Sauvignon Blanc so we bought a case of it. It should be great while watching the sunset over the beach.

I never got around to even getting a camera out, much less taking pictures. But I know our nephew and his wife took quite a few. As soon as they get them to us we'll get them posted.

You guys have got to think about joining us next year. There is plenty to do besides ride bikes. Plenty for the kids too. Dave already committed the Griffsclan to going next year, didn't you Dave? Ha. Ha. Ha.

Sounds like fun Brian......Now's the time to start a post for a rally for next year. Don't wait until 2 months before the event. We would have come this year for sure and I know others would have to......

This could be your 1st Wagonmaster experience........

Weeeeelllllllll. I guess we could do that. I don't know how much "Wagonmastering" there would be to do though. There is a flat fee for the rally, plus a "per person, per night" camping fee. If you want (and can get) hookups, that's $20 for the weekend. There are no reservations for spots and no saving of spots for later comers. (We have used creative parking techniques of our TVs in the past though.)

Rally fees are $50 per person or $110 for a family. This covers the cost of using the fairgrounds buildings and other facilities, rally insurance, door prizes, etc.

Camping fees are $15 per person, per night or $35 per family, per night. There are people that don't stay on the fairgrounds, but stay at Wine Country RV or a local hotel. So they split the fees. In all cases a family includes children under 18.

All fees are paid directly to the rally. And as I said, there isn't any site assignment or saving per se. So wagonmastering would consist of what?

Let's discuss this more up at Pt. Mugu. This is a great trip if you bike ride at all. This is not a hard core, bike 'til you drop, race through the streets type of event. We like to ride. (We rode about 35 miles a day this year.) Others we know only ride once or twice and may only do 20 miles the entire weekend. Some (Glenna) don't even bring a bike. :D  There are a lot of families there every year. There is a bicycle rodeo for the kids. Wine tasting. A "get off the training wheels" clinic. Wine and cheese party. Yoga class. Hill climb and time trial competitions. Wine tasting. And plenty of other things to do in the area. Oh, and did I mention wine tasting? Every year we visit 5 or 6 wineries and usually find 2 or 3 new ones we've never seen before. There is a local land owner that has put in a man-lake with paddle boats, canoes a log rolling game, and around this there are horseshoe pits, volleyball courts and croquet. He opens this up to all Rally participants for free every year. Great place to take the kids swimming one day.

Maybe we can get Brad and Mary to co-wagonmaster. :D

Brian,

In a case like this, it would be a "self-service rally".

Basically, you would start a thread announcing the rally with all the facts (sorta like what you just posted). Then sit back and watch how many people join. We have a saying around here.........."You plan it, they'll come".

Then you just update the first post once in awhile with new attendies.........:-()
