Brake Line Rubbed Tire and Ruined BOTH!

So we pulled the PUP out of the garage today for spring cleanup in preparation for a trip in two weeks.  After spending the afternoon getting it ready, I pulled it around the area just to make sure everything was OK.  The surge brakes where acting funny.  They would apply and release with a BANG!  I recall the same behavior at the end of last summer.  The brakes would appear to stick "on".

I checked the brake fluid, and it was low. (Nearly empty)  After further inspection, I discovered the brake line on one side had been rubbing the tire, and put a hole in the line!  DARN!  So I removed the tire to service the brake line, and also discovered the tire had been ruined!  There is a flat area worn on the inside of the tire, looking like the sidewall is now very thin.  NOT good!

Where is the best place to pick up replacement trailer tires?  It would be nice to just get a tire/wheel combo.  I also need to find a place to buy the brake line.  I was able to remove it.  I'll check with my local auto part store, but do appreciate any advice from all of you here.

Do I need to replace both sides so they match?

I'm so glad I found this problem before our trip!!!!!!

Happy Spring!

This may have some important information just in case you might have missed it ~

These folks have tires also. But let me ask ... what size?

Thanks for the info.  Fortunately, my break-away cable is not involved.  The worn line at the wheel leaked all the fluid out, eliminating all the pressure from the brake system.  That's why the surge unit was "thumping" on and off.  There's no resistance from the hydraulics.

The tire is a Duro B78-13ST in size ST175/80 D13.  It would be easiest to find a tire/wheel combo.  I'll use the new one for my spare, and my current spare will go into service so both tires on the axle match.

That bulletin for the surge brakes was two part, the first part being about the break-away cable and second was about backing the camper up and then storing, making sure the brakes were released.

Also, the same outfit has tires that you can buy with or without the rims ~

Just got back from my RV dealer.  He has ordered the brake line from Jayco, and has a matching tire in stock.  The brake hose is an odd duck with two female ends.  He couldn't find it in the catalogs, so he ordered from Jayco.

I'm so glad I found this before leaving on our first trip!

Good tips on the surge brake.  In my case, the trailer cannot be removed from the hitch ball if the surge brake is engaged.  *Whew*

Try here, my nephew got 2 tires on rims, very quick service.

Thanks for the link .... of course I have no idea if the brakes were released or not when I stored it and I already pulled it out.  Just one more thing to worry about  Guess I'll wander it over to the friendly mechanics down the street and have them look things over before I head to Bear Creek for the new canvas.  Probably a good idea anyway ;)
