Sorry if this repeats some of the threads, but I'm not quite sure which roof material I have and there are a ton of leak-stop products out there.

I have an early '90's Jayco 1406 pop-up.  The roof leaks when level and set up at a site.  It is the roof with the seam down the middle.  I can't tell where the leak is.  The seam has been caulked and I have added silicone caulk to it, but I haven't stopped the leak.  Should I remove all of the old caulk and try again??  Would one of the roll-on sealants work better??  Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think we need additional info to give good direction.

when you caulked the seam, did you caulk the center channel to the roof, or remove the entire channel to lay a bead of caulk underneath?

or Did you replace the butyl tape under the screw channel, then caulk?

With my jayco, The two skins of aluminum lay over one another by @ 1", then butyl tape over the seam, then the screw channel over the top of the butyl tape. Quite often people caulk the screw channel to the top, and the leak remains.
I say no to roll on sealants unless the aluminum is pitting and leaking everywhere.
I used 2" eternabond tape under the entire deal, removing the screw channel, tape, to hold the two aluminum skins together.  Then the butyl tape, then the screw channel, and 3M 5200 polyeurethane caulk over the butyl tape to stop the dirt pickup.  BTW, after that task I am praying not to have to do it again.

Thanks.  I got it used and the caulk was already there.  I tried adding to it, but as you say - the leak remains.  I think that I will have to do what you did.  Does the moulding on the screw channel just pull out with the screws underneath, or is there a trick to it??

I had an old (84) Jayco and the leak appeared from inside to be coming from the seam where in fact it came from the air vent (crank up type). The roof sagged and water built up and overflowed into the vent then along the inside of the roof to the center seam where it dripped.
We found out that closing the vent stopped the leak but the real fix was to rebuild the roof to prevent the sag and allow the water to run off.

I just rebuilt the roof on my 87 coleman newport.  you can click on my pictures link to see some great pics of how to redo the seams.  also if you have corner caps, pull them and seal the corners.

that is where my leaks were coming from...

very important to clean all the old stuff off first !

use 3m-5200 sealant or proflexRV sealant

One quick easy repair would be to use Eterna-Bond tape over the seam. It's kind of pricy and the looks aren't the best, but it does work. Had it on mine for 4 years now without a leak.

No trick to it, it just pulls out.  Remove the end caps, a flat blade screwdriver to get started, and pull away.  Inexpensive and replaceable.

As 4campers posted, you can go over the entire deal with a 4-6" eternabond tape.  This was my next step if the first solution did not stop the leak.

To be honest, removing and replacing the butyl tape was no easy/clean task, but it does clean up with mineral spirits.

Most importantly, stop the leak and get camping.

Thank you.  I really appreciate it.  I will definately get to it - and GET CAMPING.
