We have a new to us 2000 Coachman 1280ST pup.  When we go to light the pilot light we can't find 'the view port' to see if it is lit.  We just keep clicking the button a bunch of time - I'm hoping we don't blow ourselves up.  Anybody have any clue as to where we find this 'view port'?  Any advice?  We're really winging it.  Unfortunately we didn't get any manuals with the camper and I can't find anything online.  Please help!

Thanks,
Des

Without the make and model !!  Service Models

The flame is under the flue (the round vertical tube).
A small metal plate that swings open for viewing.

All I know off hand is it's a small Dometic fridge - I'll have to look up the model at home.  When we looked in the access panel behind the fridge we did see something that looks like the flue as you decribed it, but we couldn't find anything that swings open. It must be right in front of me - it's driving me crazy!

I had a Dometic on my Coleman, too. The little pilot lite window is, as Coach indicated, at the bottom of the chimney flue on the side of the metal box facing you. The cover he refered to is about 1/2" across and swings open from the top and opens to the side(left or right). You will need to be in the shade to see the flame. I got to the point that I just held my hand over the top of the flue to feel for heat from the flame.
I hope this helps.

Thank you!  It's right where you described.  We had to push some wires out of the way and we found it.  Like you said, you can't see the flame in the sun though so we'll try feeling it next time.  Thank you everybody, love this website!

Some have added a small mirror near the base of the chimney and direct the view directly at the pilot light. I can't say for sure just how well this trick works since I run my fridge on 110-AC shore power.

I also use the hot-to-the-touch method at the chimney to be certain the fridge is operating properly.
