Another Electrical Problem

I have a 2002 Coleman Destiny Sedona Popup:

I have two pairs of interiror 12 volt Roof lights that aren't working at all.   I've checked the fuse box and replaced all the fuses.    Switched the breakers off and on.  The lights don't work when I'm plugged into 110 power either.

Everything else seems to work ok.  Exterior 12 volt lights are ok.   Fridge, water pump, propane alarm, and outlets work ok.  I noticed this last week when we took the PU camping.

I did replace the battery a couple weeks ago, but like I said everything else seems to work ok off battery or electric.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks
JP.

JP - Welcome to PUT!

Check the galley switch.  There is a switch that should be activated when you set the galley in the upright position.  It is there to make sure the lights are off when you pop down to avoid damage or a fire.  Check the switch and the wiring to it.  You will probably find the problem there.

I have had the same issue with my PU. There is a switch located on the swing up galley, this switch activates the ceiling lights only when the galley is in the up position. Sometimes it will not be properly switched. It is in place, so that when the galley is folded down, and the camper is popped down there is no chance of a fire.

Check the drivers side rear lifting post. You should find a set of wires running along side of it. towards the bottom near your PU wall you will find a little white connector. Make sure that's its connected and that none of the wires going into the connector have come loose.
This is the elect line to your ceiling lights.

Wow, speedy responses!  Thanks guys.

I've checked the Galley switch and verified that isn't the problem. I ran a little test:  Tried using the water pump when off and it doesn't work.  Turn the galley switch on and of course the pump works.

I will check the wire Recumbentman recommended tonight.  Hopefully the problem is there.  It would make sense.

JP,

Please forgive me if this is not an issue.  You might have two switches - one BESIDE the galley that controls the water pump and the other that is UNDER the galley (which it depresses when it is in the up right position).  It is the second switch that controls the roof lights and it is only on when you depress it (in other words you can't turn it on or off as you can do with the pump switch).

Again if I miss interpreted what you wrote then forgive me.

Coleman 2002 Owner's Manual Page 50

"All trailers are equiped with a +12 volt DC in-line kill switch. This switch is located on the lower galley top. When the galley is raised to the upright position, the switch will activate thus allwoing power to be supplied to the interior lights."

It is not clear if this switch also sontrols power to the water pump.

Hope this helps.

Check the little white connector at the base of the PU as previously noted, and there is also another one on that same line tucked up there in the roof section along side the tenting material. This is the one that can be  easily pulled apart when tucking the tent material back under the roof line during the packing up from the last trip.
How do I know..... This just happened a few weeks ago to my SIL's Bayside. Drove us crazy trying to find the reason  why his ceiling lights didn't work either. This was even after I checked and cleaned the connector at the base. The top connector is almost impossible to see.... unless you know it's up there.

 Hope this helps.

Yep, I have had problems with the upper connector on both of my pop ups.  Does anyone know wher I could find a replacement conector like these?

You can use any connector you like to replace the OEM connector. Remember this connector is only there in case you need to detach the roof. If you are not planning on replacing your roof, you could just hard wire the wires together and be done with it.

I replaced the connectors on mine with the rubber insulated connectors that are used for trailer lights.  You can get two conductor connectors that are weather resistant and very durable.

Written like a true-blue Coleman / Fleetwood PU owner.
Always assuming the owner will be replacing the roof, and not even thinking about the tenting.   LOL  :D

It was the wire/connector.   Connector rear drivers side post and along the tenting material.  The black wire had been seperated from the white plug.  Plugged it back in an presto.  Thanks for the help.  The RV dealer probably would have charged me a couple hundred bucks:-)

Thanks

I believe those connectors are MOLEX type connectors.  Radio Shack used to have them if not, try Digikey.com or Mouser.com.
I had to replace one of mine soon after getting the PU.  Note you CAN just change the contact but there is a special tool to get the contact out of the housing.  It is a metal tubing with a handle with the tubing thin wall and JUST fits over the contact so that it compresses the "ears" that lock the contact into the housing.

jpickdog,

That's great it was a cheap and easy fix.
The next time it happens, remove the connectors, solder the wires together, and use shrink tubing to protect them. (or install a better grade of connectors)  ....End of problem!
