I bought a 1979 VW rabbit in '88 from my g-parents.  They had it from new to tow behind their motor home.  only had 22,00 miles on it but as i read on another post, more time working on it than driving.  But lots of fun when it ran!  My friends called it Hitler's revenge.  Lots of time pushing.:eyecrazy:

I guess my Chevy Luv with the Isuzu engine in it was Hiroshima's revenge.

I'm sure that you know this but all Chevy Luvs had Isuzu engines. In fact, that's how Isuzu got into the automotive industry.

Isuzu was a a manufacturer of industrial equipment back then. GM contracted them to build the Luv truck for 10 years, with the agreement that they could not manufacturer automobiles under the Isuzu name until the contract expired.........That was the beginning of the Japanese industrial revolution.

I worked for GM at the time and said that GM would regret the day that they did that........

I'll bet that few people realize that GM first started having cars built over seas in the 50's. They had the "Vauxhall" built in Germany in the late 40's or early 50's and branded it under the "Pontiac" name. Then, they had the "Opal" built in Germany and shipped to the US under the "Buick" brand name shortly after.

I got my first car in 1970, it was a 1961 Gord Galaxy 500, silver with a white roof, 352 Cubes under the hood, and the rear fenders had 'fins' on them. It was my Grandfathers car, and my Dad took it away from him after he tried to drive it through someones living room. It took me a while to figure out what the white paint mark on the 40mph indication on the speedometer was all about, seems my Grandfather couldn't read the speedometer so he matched the red needle with the white mark so he could tell how fast he was going!! :D

My first was an 85 Ford Ranger. I did a lot of tent camping in that truck! We mainly went on Black Creek Trail in southern MS.

Pre Katrina there was a guy down here who had an Edsel that he would run at No Limit Raceways drag strip occasionally. He'd run 115mph or so in 3 gears...  I don't remember the times but that's not bad for an Edsel with the original engine! I haven't seen it since Katrina, hope he didn't loose it... :(

I didn't say stock, I just meant it was the original block!

As far as drunk posting, well, I wasn't quite drunk...

SCCampers? South Carolina? Or Southern California? Either way, its a long way from here- I'm in New Orleans... I did camp in N. Carolina once though. Linville Gorge was incredible!

Southern California Campers.

Come-on camping with us some time.......we'll explain the whole thing to you...:p

I'd love to but that's a long way to pull a trailer from New Orleans!!! Some of us haven't retired yet (and the way things are going I may not ever retire!) so long trips are difficult. Plus there's the minor matter of not having either a tow vehicle or a trailer right now. We're still discussing the situation... Anybody know of a good tiny popup that weighs under 1000 pounds with a full shower (preferably marble or tile) and bath and two king sized slideouts? Oh, and under $5,000. A 6 burner commercial stove and full sized fridge would be nice also... When we come to a compromise and pick a trailer I'll let ya'll know! :)

Well I'm from the NJ Pine Barrens, so there's no stores, one streetlight, a stop sign, and only two paved roads - RT542 and Turtle Creek Road.  My dad gave me a hand-me-down woodsbuggy:  1961 Mercury Monterey.  He didn't have time to teach me to drive so I taught myself - and ran it over a bush that took some doing to back out of.  3-on-the-column and pulled-to-the-left from hitting a deer years back, I did okay for a 11-year-old.  The following year I painted it orange, with a brush, and did that look wierd!  My buddy and I filled the tires with water to enhance swamp travel using a propane tank filled with water and an air hose.  I removed the back seat for some reason and while bush whacking with my 13-year-old girlfriend, the hole under the back turned into a firehose going over some deep puddles:I should not have laughed at seeing her covered with muddy water!  I got a '62 Olds Super 88 with a speedometer that was a ribbon that changed color with speed, but it wasn't until '76 that I was licensed and got my real "first car", a 1956 Mercury Monterey Police Interceptor with a Phil Stropp-designed 312 V8.  It had been sagging into a neighbor's place on 542 and they sold it to me for 1$.  We worked the engine and my uncle painted it all black with Dupont Emron acrylic.  It took me all the way through a few years in Indiana and onto Cali where my common-law-wife girlfriend burned up the engine by running it out of oil.  Still miss that batmobile, armrests in the back and basically a naugahyde couch that could fit 4.  :sombraro:

In sept 1977 I bought a blue 1970 Pontiac Firebird with a Ram 400 motor. Kept it for two years and been a jeep driver ever since.

Well, I guess its my turn. Really enjoyed reading all these posts. Brings back alot of memories. My dad bought me a 65 VW bug from a friend in..roughly 1979. It got me to school and home. When you looked down to shift gears you could see the road going by. I got broadsided in high school and totalled it. My dad converted it into a baja bug and drove it off road all over Baja, Calif. many times before he finally sold it. A couple cars later I had a 69 Mach I Mustang, which I still kick myself for selling...but, no job, no car...couldn't afford to drive it. I paid in the neighborhood of $1,700 for it. Today, you can't find them up on blocks with no engine or tires for under $20,000....AUGH, I loved that car.  Keep the posts coming, love reading them.
