I fire up our 2 way fridge on propane the afternoon before we leave, by the next morning it's "cooked" itself down to the low 30's and we put in the cold food and frozen meats(a trick I learned here).  I always put water in the ice cube tray so that the freezer has that as a block of ice to help in keeping the cold.

My propane won't stay lit while towing, so we tow on 12 volts.  I've had good success with this, even on the long/hot tows, like 5hrs up into Kings Canyon, or the 12hr run to the Grand Canyon.

Another cool trick I learned here is to place a remote temp sensor from a weather station (like the Oregon Scientific models sold at Walmart) inside the fridge and put the weather station inside the TV. Allows us to keep an eye on what the fridge is doing while in transit.  Saved us last year when I forgot to put the lock pin in the refrigerator door and it got knocked open on some rough roads.
