After a few years away, im ready to get back in the campground! Im stoked!!  I started with a 1994 Jayco Eagle 10 back in 1999 and worked my way up to a travel trailer... but after few years away working through a divorce and actually getting married again.... Were ready to start camping again.  I currently have a Honda Element and want to start out basic just like I did back in 1999.  Im currently looking at a new Jayco Jay 806 or a Starcraft 816. I know they are pretty much the same rig.... but wanted to know if anyone here had one of these.  I really need to stay with an 8-foot with my tow vehicle so from my past knowledge of campers I felt that these would suit me best.  Can anyone suggest any other 8 footers that I should be looking at?  Thanks!!

Welcome to PUT, and welcome back to camping!

There are a number of manufacturers, but be sure to do your homework and look at the actual camper you are buying.  There has been a lot of consolidation in the industry over the last 2 years, and what were once reasonably reliable brands are either gone, or not so reliable.  Apparently Jayco/Starcraft just filed for bankruptcy.  Fleetwood is now Coleman again.  We love our Vikings (aka Coachmen), but our are c.2006 units, and are made very well.  Viking/Coachmen were bought by Rockwood's parent company, and many a Rockwood owner has posted of quality issues.

Look around and you may find some screaming deals if you are willing to buy a unit from a failing company, and take delivery at the factory.  However, the dealer deserves to make a profit too if you intend to rely on them for service and support.

Best of luck with your decision.  Be sure to post up some pictures when you have made your purchase!

Thanks for the feedback! However, are you sure about that Jayco filing for bankruptcy thing?  I've not seen or heard anything about that until now. I'm always reading RV business just to keep up on things as well and have not seen anything there either. I hope its not the case.

Sorry - I am sure I have been April fooled . . . http://www.arveeclub.com/showthread.php?t=68685

Sounds like you are doing your homework.  Choice of camper comes down to subjective personal preference.  Floorplans are diverse, and little things mean a lot to some folks.  We don't care for U-shaped dinettes, but some love them.

Keep us posted, and be sure to let us know how the first trip goes.
