The portable gas cooker thread reminded me that I m still looking for a small hibachi.

I had one years ago and threw it out cos it got a bit rusty.  It was the el cheapo Eckerd Drugs kind.  Since then, all I ve seen are the double ones.

I did a google search and can t find a single " burner"  one.   The cooking surface of my old one was probably about 9 or 10 inches square.  Many times I fancy grilling a steak but can t be bothered to get out the portable BBQ.

I d prefer a cast iron one but would go for another el cheapo if it were small.

I like the Lodge one but don t want to pay $70.  I did find a double cast iron one that I might get but the shipping is $12 because of the weight.

I was wondering if anyone has seen one either online or at a local retailer so I can avoid heavy shipping charges.

sandykayakWe have carried around a double cast iron hibachi (never use it though).  It really isn t that big, ours goes in a copy paper box along with the charcoal and lighter fluid.

Can t help you with where though.  Ours is easily 25-30 years old.  Do you have any old time hardware stores around or discontinued merchandise (Ollies/etc.)?

On of our local hardware stores still has Kendall 20W/20 motor oil with a SD (1968?) rating in the cans for sale.  I m tempted to buy it for antique purposes.

sandykayakNow s about the time to start prowling drugstore " seasonal" aisles and the local dollar stores. The Summer stuff is starting to show up even here with 6 feet of snow on the ground.

sandykayakalot of the drug store chains sell them come spring...like cvs, eckards, rite aid...ect

i loved the hibachis i had over the years till i switched to a gas grill.

sandykayakYour hibachi delimma reminded me of my long, gone single burner model with an expired auto tag covering the rusted out bottom. I just wanted to warn you against using a " Weber Smoky Joe"  you ll be hooked. Easily being able to cook anything from a cornish game hen, to a slab of ribs with every cut of steak in between.  Just follow the instructions in their recipe/guide and you won t even have to lift the lid to turn the meat. I guess you can tell that I m not spoiled.
 Either way, good luck.

sandykayakI was at Wal-Mart today and was browsing the camping area and came across a Lodge cast iron Hibachi. It was $54, I immediately thought of this thread and remembered you were looking for one. It might be more than you were wanting to pay but if your local wally world has one at least you won t get stuck with the shipping charges.

sandykayak

sandykayakthanks, shirley...if it s the oval shaped one with a handle, the average online price is $70.  I was hoping to pay in the $20-30 range, but i ll check it out.

i found a traditional shaped, cast iron one for $25 plus $12 shipping but it s a double burner.  I really want something small that won t be a hassle if i want to grill a steak just for myself.  I could use half of that one...or perhaps the Lodge one.  (this same co. has the lodge one for $79 pls $20 shipping!  gotta see if it s the same model at wally world.

still, i d appreciate eagle eyes for a single burner.

sandykayakHi, I m Controller for an Ace Hardware & Building Supply store. Ace Hardware carries a Steel Hibachi that lists for $9.49. Ace #8100109. If you don t have an Ace store near you, True Value Hardware carries them as well. (We used to be a True Value Store) I don t recall TV Stock # though.

sandykayak

sandykayakthanks, gary...just like the rest of my life: champagne tastes on a beer budget[8D]

As much as I d like cast iron (my local wal-mart didn t have the Lodge one), the ten dollar one will do me fine....there s an ace near my work.

sandykayak

sandykayakfound the Lodge cast iron one in the camping section at wal-mart.  Like, they didn t think of putting any with the other portable BBQs?????   Fortunately, it was way too heavy and bigger (weight and moneywise) than I wanted.

Just picked up the $9.45 steel one from Ace - they special-ordered it for me.  It s a double, and a really wanted a single, but since I have a friend staying with me for an indefinite length of time....I guess this is what I need.

appreciate all your help....just keep your eyes peeled for a small, single burner one.

sandykayakSandy, did you check out the " smoky joe"  little Weber grill?  That s what I use.  It looks and cooks just like the big weber, but in a portable version.  I think it s a 12"  grill size.

 Cheers

sandykayak

sandykayaki have a large charcoal grill for the backyard and a table top square type with a lid.

i just want something small that i will encourage me to go to the hassle of lighting a few coals to do a steak for one.

i don t want anything complicated or have to mess about with lids and folding legs.

garym053

sandykayakGlad they ordered it for you, Sandy! I ll keep my eyes open for a single when the show catalogs and new items listings come out. The singles in steel may be a thing of the past though! Have fun!
