biojbfishHi biojbfish, you might want to check out Hunting Island SP on Hunting Island, SC.  It is near Beaufort off Hwy. 17.  Has both water and electric hook-ups.  Usually crowded from April on.  They do have sites right on the beachfront and some sites a short distance away with more privacy.  Bathrooms were very clean (we tend to go to places off-season so that may have impacted the way the bathrooms were kept).  The fee is $22 in season for a site with water and electric.  There is a light house to tour nearby plus Beaufort is a beautiful town (The Great Santini was filmed there along with other movies).  Most sites are on a first come first serve basis but they do have some reserved sites.  There are restaurants in Beaufort (16 miles) and on Lady s Island (12 miles).  Hope this helps.

biojbfishApache at the North End of Myrtle beach has a public fishing pier and a resturaunt as well as beach. near enough to the attractions at Myrtle Beach (we stauyed in a timeshare about 3 blocks from Apache and seriously looked at it.

There is also a SP at the South end of Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach Travel Park also in the North of Myrtle Beach.

biojbfishThere are at least four Ocean Front CG s in South Carolina. Pirate Land, Ocean Lakes, Myrtle Beach Travel Park, MB State Park, Hunting Island, Huntington Beach, (oops, that s five). The private CG s have sites very close to the ocean and MB State Park (nicer, larger sites) requires a long walk/short drive. The private " mega"  parks in Myrtle Beach are simply huge and offer a lot of ammenities. Downside (to us) is their lack of privacy and constant traffic flow.

In NC, Salter Path ( http://www.kiz.com/salterpath/ )  comes to mind. Very nice park. There are sites on the ocean, some in a shaded area behind the dunes and some across the road along the sound.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!  This is just what we re looking for.....it s even walking distance to both the ocean and the sound.......couldn t be more perfect (unless it was a little farther north!)  The one we used to go to on Holden Beach had the same ocean and sound access....WONDERFUL!) And it even has a pool!!!!!  (for DD)  Have you been to this campground personally???  If so, how did you like it?  Was it clean and family friendly?  You don t happen to know of any other CG s like this a little farther north, do you (both ocean & sound in walk distance)?
 Have a great day.....thanks again![:D][:D][:D]

biojbfishSorry for the delay in replying....night shift REALLY bites into internet time! I don t recall the CG in Holden Beach.....we live in northern Brunswick county....but that seems to be a pretty common theme for ocean front CG s. The property/acerage becomes so valuable and the tax burden so great, the owners sell to developers. The CG owners win, the developers win and us campers loose[:(]

We haven t actually camped in Salter Path but plan to change that this year. A couple of years ago, we rode through the park and met the lady that runs the CG. We were really impressed with the whole package. The only drawback that we could see is that Hwy 58 splits the CG; the pool, office, store and sound-side sites are on one side while the ocean front and dune-side sites are on the other. Can t remember the speed limit but getting across the two lane road shouldn t be much of an issue. The CG is very clean and well taken care of....I don t hesitate to recommend it. There are a lot of attractions in the area but one of the more unique ones is the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores: http://www.aquariums.state.nc.us/

When we go this year, one of the shaded ocean-side sites in the trees will be our first choice. I m not familiar with similar CG s north of Salter Path.

Feel free to e-mail if I can help you any more.

biojbfishThere are several of them in NC too...

National Park Service operates four of them in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. All four of them are no hook-up s, bascially ocean front, and have little or no shade.

[link=http://www.nps.gov/caha/pphtml/camping.html]Click Here[/link] for direct NPS link for campground info on Cape Hatteras...

I know for a fact that 3 out of 4 are right on the beach, camping right behind the dune line. Walking to the beach is an understatement, you re already there! (not sure about the one in Frisco) I don t believe the ocean front one s have any tree s so bring your own shade/canopy.

Also, if you desire full or partial hook-up s, there are several private/commercial campgrounds also on the ocean front. Camp Hatteras is the biggest one down there, it s ocean front, has 400 sites, Water, Elect, Sewer, Cable TV, and is very expensive (roughly $55 per night family of four - In season). No a single tree here, so bring your own shade! It s ocean front with private pedestrain access to the beach, also has 3 swimming pools, paved roads & concrete site pads, hot showers and flush toilets.

Next door to them is the KOA, not as big, but just as expensive. This place might have a couple of tree s, but it s pretty open like the one mentioned above. Also ocean front with private access to the beach. At least one swimming pool here.

About a quarter mile down from those two is a small family owned and operated campground (and my personal favorite) called Ocean Waves Campground. This place has something none of the others seem to have, shade tree s!!! They also have full hook-up s (water, elect, sewer, cable tv), private access to the beach, swimming pool, paved roads & concrete site pads, hot showers and flush toilets. Oh BTW, this one cost about half as much as the two above, approx $25.50 per night full hook-up s family of 4).

More info on these (including some pictures) can be found on my website [link=http://www.gonecamping.net/reviews/nc/nc.html]GoneCamping.net[/link] or you can visit [link=http://camphatteras.com/]Camp Hatteras[/link] and/or [link=http://www.koa.com/where/nc/33166.htm]KOA[/link] sites directly. I don t know of any website for Ocean Waves...

There are others, but these are the best known and best liked, all of them ocean front! Hope this helps...

biojbfish

biojbfishSkip....sounds like a great place.....love the access to both ocean and sound!!!!  Consider me there!

Cliff.....thanks for the info.......i know you re right about the KOA in hatteras......in-laws said there s NO shade in site!!!!!  I like the one you recommended......gotta have some shade  (we don t have an AC on our PU!!!), and we have to have water and elec.  (we haven t yet figured out how to do the dry camping thing with batteries and solar panels.....sounds way complicated to us.  Do you know if Ocean Waves is near the sound???  Gotta have access to crabbin!!!!!
 Thanks again

PS.  I m a trial member here.......the $29 fee seems a little excessive to me.....is it worth it, or can you pretty much get info on the public boards???

Gone-Camping

biojbfishOcean Waves is not sound front, but the sound is right across the street. If you have 4x4 then you can just drive out to the sound side at many points along the way, and/or the ocean front too. Phone # for reservations at Ocean Waves is 252-987-2556

As for membership, you have to ask yourself why several hundred of us have paid this price despite the fact there are free site s out there! That speaks volumes on it s own. Now consider the fact that I m a moderator at irv2.com and that tells an even bigger story. I ve been a member here going on 3 years now, and they are not going to get rid of me by charging me money, they ll have to kick me out first!

Gone-Camping

biojbfishIf you want REAL sound side camping, go to Frisco Woods Campground (not my favorite by any means but...) they have campsite s right on the sound!

biojbfish

biojbfishWhat we re looking for is oceanfron (w/in 5 min.walk.....hard to lug all those boogie board and coolers, towels, chairs, umpbrellas etc.......) with access to the soundside for  crabbing .  We also don t like the area we re in to be too commercial, but should have shops and such within 15 min (or so) drive for DD.  So the ideal campground would be one that spans the width of an island with access to both.......
The one by Skip P above looks very promising.  Checked out the Salter Path CG and it seems to fit the bill.........wondering if there is any civilization nearby for DD (17 yr olds need access to shopping!), and i don t mind a bit of that myself!
Thanx to everyone on this board.......you re all so helpful!!!!!!!!![:)][:)][:)]

Gone-Camping

biojbfishCamp Hatteras expands to both sides, but like I said, the sound is across the street from Ocean Waves. We take the 4x4 s down there, that way when we go to the beach, we don t have to lug anything, and we can drive on down the beach until we find a secluded area just for ourselves! Good luck and have fun!

biojbfish

 biojbfishSure wish i had a 4x4........sounds great!!!!!!!!!

biojbfish

biojbfishThanx Cliff!  Put it in my " favorites"  to check out when i ve got more time!
