I know this is very OT but the forum is called The Campfire and this is a topic I would pose during a campfire soooooo does anyone have any experiance with magnets and arthritis?  I saw them being sold at a show today and am wondering if they are worth the $100 they were being sold for.  If this braclet will help with even the arthritis in my hands and elbow, I d be happy.  My hips and knee are another story.  So has anyone used these products?

fivegonefishingTammy I have heard about the copper ones and the magnetic ones are starting to get some research in. For some they really seem to work. I don t know if I would spend $100 unless, maybe, your insurance may kick in a bit for the thing if you can get a DR. to prescribe it.  It may just be worth a shot.

 fivegonefishingHi Tammy,

Years ago I bought magnets made by Nikken, Inc.  They had all shapes and sizes, but I purchased one that would work for my back.  I ve used it off and on for about 10 years.  Like with any alternative approach, I think it s different strokes for different folks.  What works for me, might not necessarily work for you.  It is said that the magnets block pain by stimulating nerve endings effecting the nervous system, which depends on electrical charges to deliver its signals.  They may also create charged particles in the blood, producing heat and dilating blood vessels.  Or they could increase the blood?s ability to carry oxygen as well as boost levels of oxygen and nutrients.  All of these things could ultimately relieve pain.  When I use my magnet the painful area becomes very warm which to me indicates an increased blood flow.  I feel I heal more quickly and relief faster.  I was told by the Nikken representative that placing the magnet over the injured area was what would promote the pain relief, so it is hard for me to think that wearing a braclet would promote relief for arthritis throughout the body.  I take supplements for the arthritis and use the magnet when an area of my body becomes stressed or injured.  These are my thoughts, but remember that people do react differently to alternatives.  fivegonefishingOf course the effect is only about 1/32 of an inch from the surface of the magnet. The products tested on one of the debunking shows showed that the effects of the magnets couldn t be detected through a 1/16 inch of skin tissue. So not much chance of ionizing blood or creating heat. Even JAMA has stated that any effect noted in several studies of magnetic healing or copper wearing was a plecebo effect.
All the literature for these products falls into the " it sounds good on paper"  catagory. They ve been selling copper and magnetic brackets, shoe sole inserts and various wraps containing copper and magnets for over 100 years. So far the only proven effect is the slimming of the wallets of those who purchase them.

All these " miracle products"  aren t under any government control, like things sold as " suppliments"  aren t required to prove their effectiveness, unlike prescription drugs. IMHO they should be regulated. A lot of people are harmed by these things and even more are harmed by using them instead of seeking medical treatment.

 Tammy,
I go with g-whiz. My wife has carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists. She had finally gotten to the point where it was going to have to be surgery. She would wake up at night crying because the pain was so bad. Her whole arm would be literally on fire from wrist to shoulder. A friend of ours gave her a set of Nikken bracelets to try. She didn t tell us what they were or even what they were really for, just try them! My wife expeirenced relief very soon after. It was the first time she had slept through the night in over 3 years. The magnets don t work for everybody. I don t get as much and as immediate a relief as my wife does from magnets, but they do make a difference. As far as studies go they are being performed, but the current results are very preliminary. And they bear out the theories that it works better for some people than others. Just like a lot of medications, work better for some than others. My suggestion to you is to see if you can find someone that handles Nikken and see if you can borrow a set of bracelets for a week to see if you get relief. If you do, they would be well worth the money. JMHO

 fivegonefishingHi Tammy,

I don t use the magnetic braclets, but I do use a Q-ray. I m not sure what the process is, but it has something to do with ions instead of magnetism. I have two bad knees and, I don t know if its the Q-ray or the weight loss, but " something"  has helped the pain in my knees. The manufacturer has a 14 day guarantee and they tell you that you ll know within a week if their product is going to help any pain.

fivegonefishingMy mom bought me a magnetic bracelet because I kept spraining my wrist.  I know it sounds odd, but I would sprain it at least 2x a month and use a wrist brace for it.  I tried the bracelet, and what I did notice is more pain ???  The only thing that finally stopped my pain is to have my wrist adjusted by a chiropractor a few times!  I don t remember the last time I sprained it.
I know this does not really relate to arthritis, but it is a different experience with the bracelets.  My friend and her sister swear by them for pregnancy/morning sickness-but they also are pressure point bands w/ magnets.
Good questio, though.  I would double check on the price though.  I m sure you could save yourself a bundle by looking around on the internet - maybe e-bay?

fivegonefishingWow Tammy, I cant believe this. Just on Saturday I saw the infomercial for  the Q-Ray bracelet. With their " discount"  it totaled $100 plus tax. Well I am very leary of this kind of stuff but I suffer from fibromyalgia and decided it was worth the money for any kind of relief. Most of my pain is in my ankles, legs, knees and hips. I stopped complaining about my constant pain and resigned myself to this for the rest of my life. I know I have easily spent over $100 on ibuprophen which helps some. I will let you know how this bracelet works. Since Saturday I have met several people who use the Q-Ray bracelet and have experienced great relief, swearing by it. I also felt the testimonies on TV seamed sincere. We shall see.   Sandy Smith

 LabloverHi Sandy,

I too use the Q-Ray. I mentioned it in my previous post. Most of their products give you a 14 day money back guarantee. They told me I would know within a week if it was going to help.

I did start feeling better within a week and I swear by mine now. It was the best $100 I ve ever spent. From the documentation, the braclet holds its " power"  for approximately two years then it has to be replaced.

 Very interesting product.

fivegonefishingMy mother bought me a QRAY  a few years ago. I use my right hand, but I am really left handed. I wore it like a right handed perso,. then I saw one of their infomercials, and changed it to wearing it like a left handed person.  Within a few minutes, I felt my back muscles ease.

I started getting migranes about a week later and was literally living on migraine pills. I rarely ever get migraines.  The pain kept getting worse and worse, we were on a quick trip to Indiana, I was laying in my sister-in-laws house crying because my head hurt so bad, I could not get to sleep. I got to thinking what I had done differently the past few weeks.  It was the QRAY. I took it off and put it on the night stand. Within 10 minutes the pain eased and I was sleeping, they only pill I had to take the next day was an allergy sinus pill, which is normal for me anyway. I have not had another migraine since then, that was last fall. The QRAY is on my desk at work...If anyone wants it, it can be theirs for nothing, just come and get it. the effect on my back muscles wore off about a week later, I felt them gradually tighten over that period, but the migraine is not worth the back muscles feeling better.

 fivegonefishingWhat great responses, thanks everyone.

fivegonefishingMy wife is in the medical profession and when I talked with her about copper bracelets and magnets her response was " if you think it works and makes you feel better go ahead and try it but there is zero medical research that actually shows either of these remedy anything."   I ve got mild arthritis in my right wrist and it only bothers me a little after working on a computer all day or playing golf.  I ve tried the copper bracelet and it didn t seem to do much but a friend of mine swears by his dispite his green wrist.

fivegonefishingi have arthritis in my right hip (and now my right lower arm is starting to hurt - hope it s not carpal tunnel syndrome!).

I fought taking NSAIDS...but was limping quite badly.  Now Celebrex is my partner-in-life!  That and my hot tub.

I m so stiff in the morning that I sort of slide into the spa and let the heat do its work.....I have no doubt that the mental relaxation adds to the physical hydrotherapy.

With a prescription, you can even get a tax exemption.

Acts 2:38 girl

fivegonefishingI envy you Sandy!!  I ll have to let my Mom know what you said, because she has a hot tub also, and was hurt in a car accident a few years ago.  I bet it would really help her!  [:)]

Acts 2:38 girl

fivegonefishinglet me re-phrase that.  I do NOT envy your pain and I m sorry you have to deal with that.  I am glad you found something that helps, though!  [;)]
