What kind of fuel do you all use when cooking with the DO?  Regular wood or brickets?  So far, I ve been using just the wood we bring.

And, do you place the DO on a rack or directly on the heat source?

fivegonefishingI always use charcoal bricquettes for my DO and it works great.

fivegonefishing I use wood, we bring that along with us. Seeing as we don t drag a BBQ we diddn t want to bother dragging charcoal too. The wood seems to be working out well so far. It s usually a dirt surface where we camp so I just set a few coals next to the fire and set the DO on them and some on top

fivegonefishingWell it s a lot easier to judge temperature using briquettes than just wood coals. Figuring the amount of coals for a temperature is tougher than 12 briquettes.

fivegonefishingthats what i am gonna use is briquettes...i think it would be easier to judge using those....can t wait till mine gets here!

fivegonefishingPJay is the real cook in our house (at least ten times the cook that I am), and she uses only Kingsford brand charcoal briquettes because it is relatively simple to control temperature.

Don t use Match-Light because they burn too hot.

My hat s off to ForestCreature, using wood coals.  That takes some skill and experience to get right.

We first met ForestCreature in the Lodge factory outlet store in Pigeon Forge, TN.  We spent a small fortune on additional Dutch Ovens and related implements that day.

fivegonefishingI use charcoal briquettes and put them on top and bottom of my DO.  We bought the set that Sam s had for around $35.  The lid was flat which is perfect but it didn t have legs.  DH made me a great stand to use, it s some type of metal brackets which he bent in the middle and it screws together, sorta looks like an " x" .  It makes it easy to put the briquettes in between.

fivegonefishingI ve alsways used charcoal and usually Kingsford at that. Have sometimes used Royal Oak with no problems, but avoid discount and store brands as they are not as consistant as Kingsford.
