Does anyone know how high the wind has to be before you have to bail out of your PU?  With thunderstorm season in full force here and a planned camping trip next weekend - DH has raised the question.
Thanks for any help - Susan

slowpezI do not know the number but if you do not feel safe, get out.  I camped in a hurricane in Nh once, it was lots of fun.  The challenge of staying dry etc.

 slowpezLocation, Location, Location!

I used to put my (first older) PU on top of a cliff on the great lakes... Beacause of the view... It battered it... Blew in the sides -bounced the bunks up and down - and aged it before my eyes... (as we where building a house)..

We put it down when not in use... Once the wind even started lifting the roof - (I forgot a clamp when I vacated and for a pending storm)...

 So that said.....
40 Knots if bunks are pointed into the wind -

30 Knots on the side (and it will rock quie a bit..
35 Knots onthe side -the faberic will start comming of the sides (pinched)
40 Knots the Lift System will bend or buckle

You could be in a 90 MPH storm tucked under the trees etc... and other than falling limbs you d be OK...

slowpezI don t know about wind,  but I d keep an eye on lightning strikes as well.  Last summer we saw a tree get struck about 25 feet away.  The shrapnel from the tree blew out the windows of a TT near the tree.  There were several pieces of tree imbedded a few inches into the ground - some were about 8 feet from the popup. The canvas sides suddenly didn t seem very reassuring.[&:]

We get into the car now during intense storms and go for a drive or get ourselves over to the campstore.

slowpezCan t answer for sure, but one thing I always try to do is position the camper so that the back side of it is facing the prevailing winds. This helps keep the awning from becoming a sail. The downside is that you may not get the exact campsite you wanted.
